Sometimes there's nothing like a great 1980's horror novel to lift your spirits and remind you that horror at one time was somewhat straight forward and simple. You know, nothing that would make you head work harder than it had to while you were reading.
I'm not sure where I got this, it may have been from a package I recieved from a friend, but the book itself has yellowed and is kinda worn. That alone got me to smiling. It looked to be well read...and enjoyed.
I've read some of Gates work before, the two Grimm books and Vaders' were three that I enjoyed so I was kinda looking forward to this one. I also remembered an author, Gord Rollo I think it was, referenced this book as one that scared him when he was younger. So a couple of nights ago I dug in. And I am so glad I did.
To give you a frame of reference, it reminds me of The Fog a little bit by James Hebert. It's a novel divided up with many different scenes, all connected, of some glorious horror.
Here's one scene:
<<<< She somersaulted forty feet to the bottom and landed facefirst on a pile of granite shards sunk into the peripheral mud of the swamp. Her body snapped and cracked as it wedged between the rocks. With a wet, crucnching sound, a large chunk of her face was sheared off by a rock and flew spinning into the swamp. Blood exploded from her head like juice from a squashed melon. It ran down the rocks in narrow streams.
Athe the top of the cliff, Doug stood looking down at Louise's crushed body. Behind him, smoke rose in tiny wisps. A twig snapped and the bushes rustled, but he didn't turn. He knew who was behind him.
"If we're lucky," Rick said, rubbing ashes on Doug's arm as he stepped next to him," she's not dead yet." >>>>
And this one:
<<<<Grey was oblivious to everything except his orgasm. He groaned loudly and arched his back. Debby raised her head a little and saw a pair of feet in the doorway. She tried to disengage her face from Grey's lap. As she did so, she looked up. Her grandmother stood in the doorway. The top half of her head hung sideways in a bloody flap. Her face was a mass of chewed flesh, crushed bone were missing. Ground tissue bulged through the cavity. Her nose was a flat bloody wad. Her right eyeball hung from its socket and dangled in the raw hamburger flesh.
Debby tried to scream. Grey, still oblivious in ecstasy, forced her head back down on him, filling her mouth again.
Grandmother stepped into the room.
Debby convulsed with fear and bit down hard, clenching her teeth.
Grey's eyes bulged. His mouth dropped open in a climbing shriek as he stared down at the blood spurting from between his legs and from the corners of Debby's mouth...
Debby fell off the bled, blood spewing from her mouth as she choked on Greg's manhood.>>>>
This book is great! It's full of bloody scenes, one after another. So if your in the mood for a little retro horror, I would recommend picking this one up.
Yep, Tony, it was definitey me. I loved this book and it's one I consier influencial in my development as a writer. It's not perfect, of course, but I loved how fast paced and genuinely scary it was for me. I doubt it would scare me a much now, but still, a wonderful creepy book that really fired up my imagination.
