Seen any good movies lately?
Has anyone here seen the movie Let the Right One In? I've heard great things about it and I'm looking forward to it.
I've been chained to my computer lately, slaving over a hot book, but I frequently treat myself to a movie with Dawn in the evenings. Lately, we've seen some good ones.
I know a lot of people who didn't like it, but we laughed our asses off at Zack and Miri Make A Porno. I've found Kevin Smith to be very hit-and-miss, with more misses than hits in recent years. But he's redeemed himself in my eyes with this movie and Clerks 2, which I thought was an excellent sequel that did all the things a good sequel should do. I've become a big fan of Seth Rogen. This guy has funny in his bones. His range is limited, but what he does, he does beautifully. He shines here. Is it just me, or is Elizabeth Banks in every other movie being made these days?
Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project made me laugh a lot, and it contains in abundance one of my favorite things -- old showbiz stories. It's directed by John Landis, who's known Rickles since 1969, when Landis was a gofer on the movie Kelly's Heroes, in which Rickles appeared. This combination documentary and concert film talks to a lot of familiar faces about Rickles' career, with some gems from Clint Eastwood (his "Larry Dickman" story is hilarious), Bob Newhart (Rickles' best friend), Debbie Reynolds, and others. And the DVD extras contain some great anecdotes as well. I'm a lifelong Rickles fan, and a real junkie when it comes to old show business stories, so this DVD put me in hog heaven.
Eagle Eye had a good idea, but it was handled in a pretty mediocre way. I never really felt engaged by the movie. That was due in part to the weak script, and to the presence of Shia LaBeouf. Sorry, but I'm just not buyin' this kid. He's a mumbling spitter. I might have enjoyed the movie more had LaBeouf been given subtitles. He sounds like he has a mouthful of oysters. His lines are garbled, and at times, I had the urge to throw a tarp over myself. It was like being in the front row at a Gallagher show. There were moments when I became concerned that perhaps he was having a stroke. His costar, Michelle Monaghan has great potential, I think. I first noticed her in Shane Black's wonderful 2005 comedy-thriller Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I thought she stole the show. I think part of that was due to the well-written character she played (the whole script was well-written). Since then, she hasn't had a role as strong as that one, but I think she has talent, and given the right material, she could really shine. There's a great thriller buried somewhere in Eagle Eye, even if it is a cobbled-together combination of ideas already covered in other movies. Unfortunately, director D.J. Caruso and the four screenwriters who wrote it just didn't find it.
If you're a fan of actor Malcolm McDowell, get your hands on a copy of Never Apologize, his one man show about his long friendship with director Lindsay Anderson. It's full of behind-the-scenes stories about the movies he did with Anderson (If..., O Lucky Man, and Brittania Hospital. As a movie, this is not award-worthy material -- it's pretty much just a straightforward record of McDowell on the stage doing his show. But the material is excellent. Again, this goes to my love of showbiz lore -- there's plenty to be found here. It ranges from being laugh-out-loud funny to moments that actually made me misty-eyed.
I've got movies like The Changeling and Gran Torino (both Eastwood flicks) waiting to be watched, and some older films I missed that I've stacked by the DVD player, like Apocalypto. Have you seen anything lately that you'd recommend?
I saw Let the Right One In at the Melbourne film fest last year and really liked it. A nice take on horror; rather refreshing.
I recently saw the great documentary 'Not Quite Hollywood' about the Ozploitation scene in the 60s and (primarily) 70s. If you have an interest in these kind of films, I can't recommend it strongly enough.
I'd like to see Eagle Eye just for some dumbed down action (like Die Hard IV). We saw Taken a few weeks back and it was definitely worth the trip. Liam Neeson was awesome!
I only see a half dozen movies per year and most of are bad or just meh. I think movies are mostly a venue for thirteen year olds nowadays, so why bother. Last good movie I saw was Before the Devil Knows Your Dead. It is a bleak crime drama. I like bleak and I like crime, but my wife hated it because it was so bleak.

I am a real sucker for great visuals and CORALINE delivers. It is the first stop-motion feature film done in 3D. Totally gorgeous. Tim Burton type landscapes. I never did like claymation so I am not sure what they did this with. Bears no resemblance to that crap. Puppets of some superior sort. Neal Gaiman wrote the story this is based on. Not too sure who did the screenplay but I think he had a hand in it. For kids of all ages...... Speaking of kids of all ages I am pretty psyched that Edward Lee's HEADER will be out on DVD in June or July. Camelot Books is offering a free Ed Lee "chapette" with a pre-order. Ed sez the short short story will be based on a minor character from the novella HEADER.
