- Let's talk Richard Laymon and Leisure book club
I got the newest book from Leisure by Richard Laymon. Dark Mountain. I enjoyed it pretty well. The first part was damn good. The second part was pretty good but the third part made me feel like I missed a chapter or two. Anywhoooo... what I am curious about is what you think about getting Richard Laymon books with your book club subscription. The books are solid enough and I totally enjoy most of them but I find it a bit odd to get them for my subscription. Shouldn't that be for newer authors or current authors? How am I suppose to find that next "Stephen King" (I hate it when I read that but that was the only way I could think to word it) if I get books by an author who is dead and no longer creating works? I think they should offer his books as a third book option. You know click this box if you want us to add a older author you may or may not be aware of. I would be willing to pay extra for that. I would think that Leisure would want to promote new/current authors.
Leisure is only committed to selling 24 horror novels a year. Laymon is typically a good seller for them so it is only natural to include his work in those 24 novels. Since members of the club recieve all 24 novels, we get all of the Laymon books that are released.
I for one enjoy Laymon and do not mind his books in the club offerings. But having said that, I do not find myself rushing to read the lastest release when it comes to my doorstep like I first did when I first joined the club.
That I think is a result of Leisure pushing too much Laymon product (I think it was up to 4 novels a year) and some pretty mediocore books. The funny thing though, is once I do pick up his latest release and start reading it, I feel like I'm with an old friend and I wonder why I didn't pick it up sooner.
Even though I've read them, I am still waiting for the re-release of Quake and Funland. Quake is one of the best novels the man has written, and Funland, while not in my top 5, was just a fun book to read.

I think Kelly Laymon, Richard's daughter gets everything her dad would be making-but I could be wrong.
As far as the book club, I don't mind because it's a great writer named Laymon whose books I'm getting. If they were pushing something not so great time and time again, I'd be pissed.
I'm about to go on a Laymon reading spree pretty soon; I have The Traveling Vampire Show, Savage, Darkness Tell Us, Beware, The Woods Are Dark, and Dark Mountain to read.
Man, that's a lot of rump.

You know what Hellolost? I agree with you totally.
I really dig Laymon, and its certainly nice to see the re-releases of some favorites, but I already own a lot of his stuff. I'd much rather see Leisure giving some brand-new authors some exposure, and the book club is such a good way to do that. Like you said, make the Laymon books an option, or just offer them in the catalog. That way we could pick and choose which ones we get copies of.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was me you passed them along to. I know I sent them along to someone else but I can't remember who now. For some reason Craig comes to mind.
But I would read them again in a heartbeat. I think it was Quake where I counted the number of "rumps" in the story.
I've often wondered about the merits of such a club and probably couldn't bring myself to join one. Have any of you made any great discoveries from this club?
As for Laymon, I even get a kick out of his lesser quality material. His books make me feel comfortable and my girlfriend has been obsessed with him for quite some time.

I think every book club might have it's occasional dud sent out here and there, but Leisure has put out some great books by some great authors.
The ones that immediately come to mind are examples like:
In Silent Graves and Mr. Hands by Gary Braunbeck Under The Overtree by James Moore The Jigsaw Man by Gord Rollo Red by Jack Ketchum Bloodstone by Nate Kenyon The Rising by Brian Keene
There's a lot more I could list. Plus, two books a month at only $10.50, is not bad at all-especially in these times.

Horrordude makes the best point for joining the club. You can't beat the price and you can return any book you do not want.
If you are a Brian Keene fan also, joining is a no brainer. You get all of his Leisure releases. Lets face it, when it comes to mass market paperbacks for horror, Leisure has the best authors. This is a great way to read what's new, discover some great new authors, and do it inexpensively.
Go for it! I love seeing that small brown box come in at the end of every month.
