Here's something I've always found very interesting: what writers listen to when they're writing? If they listen to any music at all, that is.
I'm sure everyone on here knows the stories about Stephen King listening to loud hard rock when he's composing his latest bestseller. For myself, I'm in between, listening to something when I write and sometimes not. I try to mix it up. If I'm writing a part in a story I feel is very emotional, I might have something like Pink Floyd playing, and if I feel like I need a boost of something a little nasty at a certain part of the story, I slap on some raging metal, anything from Motorhead to Iron Maiden is nice when this urge comes over me.
And I'm not saying a good writer needs anything beyond his fingers and keyboard to write, I mean if a writer chooses to use a certain type of music to enhance the mood he's feeling when writing.
Then there's always writers who need absolute silence, which I also find myself practicing often.
But here's where my mind get's weird-I know, it's always weird ... But, what if the writer who only cranks hard driving rock bands, was to suddenly start listening to only classical music? Meaning Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. Would his writing change? Would his voice change?
So I was wondering what every writer on this board has playing-if anything at all-when he or she is writing.
Let me know. I find this crap interesting.
Just don't tell me you write naked and listen to boy bands while balancing a rubber chicken on your head ... Hey wait a minute ... I did that last Halloween ... (Not the boy bands. Just the nakedness and the rubber chicken ... It's a long story.)

It depends. Some days I need to listen to mostly instrumental stuff, like Dead Can Dance or Autumn Tears. Sometimes if I have the rock and metal going, I end up distracted, singing and playing air drums with pencils. Haha. If I'm in one of those moods, the instrumental stuff keeps me focused. I also find that prog-rock and -metal will focus me as well. Something about the complexity of the music, I think.
But in general, I just hit shuffle and roll with it. I bought a 1TB external drive a few months back and have slowly been ripping my collection to it. I currently have about 65,000 MP3s on it, and I still have about 2,000 CDs to rip. So one minute I might be listening to Ani Difranco, and the next Obituary. Not sure how that affects my writing. Hopefully it adds some diversity.

My normal music tastes run the gamut from punk to classical. When I'm writing, or doing an editing job for someone, I listen to prayer chants. For some reason, those Tibetan monks doing their thirty-minute prayer chant just focuses my mind. That's the only time I listen to it.

I need silence. If I put music on then I start listening to it, really focusing on it, and that distracts me from the work.
