Is the economy freaking anyone else out?
So I just talked to my aunt. Back story. When I started working at my company it was the whole building. Howard got me an interview. Howard then purchased the retail portion of the company. This made us two companies in the same house. I work for the construction side and Howard and my aunt (who I got an interview there) work for the retail part. My aunt just told me that Howard (a good friend of mine) has to shut his doors at the end of this month. He is in deep financial trouble to the point of possibly losing his house along with his business. So the company in the front of the house is leaving. My company gets rent from that company so I have no idea how that is going to effect us. They haven't told my boss yet. It is just horrible. I am not suppose to know. It is so scary out there right now. I feel so bad for Howard. I feel so scared about my job. UGH
I recently found a substantial mistake I made over a year ago that is just going to affect my company now. I have been in constant contact with my boss since I found it and have done everything in my power to fix what I can but still it is almost a 50 thousand dollar mistake. It feels like it is pouring. I know I have sold several million dollar jobs in the last two years but still. A mistake like this in this economy can mean job loss. I am scared to death.
Mr. Hello has been unemployed since November when his company went belly up. He never got a final paycheck or anything. They just closed the doors. There seems to be no jobs to be found.
So yes the economy is freaking me out big time. My job is freaking me out. The loss of my friends company is freaking me out. I guess myself in general is freaking out.
And I guess I just needed to put it all out there for you guys since I consider you all friends. How is the economy making you feel?
Your post certainly puts things into perspective Hello.
You must be going through hell right now, I feel so badly for you. There are a lot of people in the same situation as you, I seem to talk to more and more of them everyday. So to answer your queston, yes, it has me scared too.
Well at least we aren't losing the house like so many other people. And I am so thankful that I have a job at this point. It is just very stressful having one of us out of work. I can't imagine both of us.
Bill won't be getting his pay raise this year because the Nevada budget is in bad shape but we will be okay. His job is secure. I am worried about some of my friends though.

My job and my wife's job are relatively (knock on wood) secure but we have cut back our spending. I cancelled my membership in the Leisure book club, we cancelled internet and cable at home. We just watch DVDs through zip (netflix in Canada). We try not to eat out anymore and limit our spending on groceries to a set amount.
Best of luck Hellolost. I hope things turn out ok for you.

As a palm and Tarot reading writer of yarns married to a dance instructor my financial life has been nothing but insecure for damn near ever.
I see the newspapers and hear the news and try not to worry. It's going to be a rough old ride but for me it has always been rough. Every year, between January to May I am just hunkered down and hanging on - praying for more tourists and a little fair weather.
Life is like licking honey from a thorn - you learn to chew carefully, enjoying the sweet while it lasts.
Hang in there Hello-lady. This shit too will pass.

First off let me apologize if I sounded whiney or poor me. I think last night the stress completely overtook me and I just needed to purge it out some where. I am better off then a lot of people out there right now. I need to suck it up lol. What I didn't realize before was how stress actually affects people. I feel strange. Light headed and headachy. I know it is stress but I can feel it through out my whole body. It feels like I am on the verge of breaking out in tears constantly. It is a strange sensation. Horrible too. I wish it would go away.
So thanks for letting me vent here. Better then a screaming match at home right lol
Hello, let me say, that I wish you and Mr. hello all the best of luck and hope you find something soon. But, yeah, this is a freakish economy. Almost makes me want to move back to Canada.

Yeah, it is scary out there. My wife was laid-off last year but before that, in 2007, she lost a pretty lucrative office mgr position she'd had for several years. So the shit has been hitting the fan for us for the last year and a half. My job (knock wood, too) is pretty damn secure but my company has made cutbacks, including halting pay raises for the year. My wife is working (finally, after 6 months of job-hunting...and it ain't the best job but its a paycheck, right?) and we're climbing out of the financial hole we are in. We weren't one of the dummies (no offense) that bought a house with an ARM, but back when we bought our house 3 years ago, our combined annual income was very nice. Now...not so nice. We're hoping to work out a deal with our mortgage co. to modify our mortgage so we can keep our house. The upside to all this is from all the research I've done is that they ARE willing to work with you, with a few provisions...and hopefully we will get something hammered out very soon.
And like many of you mentioned, we've seriously cut back on expenditures and basically just pay our bills and make sure we have groceries in the house. Athough the tax return from Uncle Sam is going to help, too.
I wish ALL of you luck during this hard time. We are suffering in one way or another...or know someone who is.
I'm completely stressed out, not necessarily with the economy in general, but certainly within my own family. But my wife did get a job yesterday doing nursing stuff for a school district here, so that's at least something to be happy about. Bad thing is, they pay once a month, so when she starts the beginning of March, she won't get paid until mid-April.

The economy is a mess in UK too. My job doesn't pay particularly well, but is relatively secure. My fiances isn't, but we keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
Hellolost and everyone who is having difficulties, I sincerely hope that things improve for you soon. My thoughts are with you all.

That really sucks hellolost, sorry to hear about it. The economical situation is hitting hard over here in Australia too, many jobs being lost and debt soaring. I work in a library within an educational institution so thankfully I feel relatively safe but I feel for everyone who may be getting raped over this.
As for it equaling the great depression; I sure hope not but I wouldn't be surprised.
Oddly enough, my company announced it was profitable for the first time in five years. They don't have a profit sharing plan for tech employees like me, but they decided to pay out as if there was one this year. That was mighty nice of them, though there is always a chance of layoffs to keep themselves in the black.

It's pretty scary, but personally, it hasn't shaken things up. Not yet, anyway. One of the great things about being a writer is that when everything goes south for everyone financially, things don't really change for writers. I have no pension to lose. I have no job to lose. My livelihood is just as insecure and precarious as it's ever been, heh-heh. Things pretty much stay the same while the shit's hitting the fan all around me. Dawn has a pretty secure job. Here's hoping it stays that way.
Ha! Thanks, Horrordude, you have no idea how much I appreciate that. But writing for anyone is one of those tenuous professions -- like acting, for example -- in which each project is a new experience that may or may not fly. I know the economy has hit publishing hard, and the industry was already having problems, but as long as it's still there, we writers have a place to sell our stuff. The question is whether or not each new project will succeed, and that remains true no matter what the state of the economy may be.
