Saying Uncle by Greg Gifune
Oh my God. I started this about an hour ago and just finished it. I'm still numb from the emotional power of this book. From the first pages I realized that the writing in this book was going to floor me, and damn it to hell if Gifune didn't have me mesmerized right up to the last page.
This is a coming of age story like I've never read before.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out, and I want to thank the friend who sent it to me a thousand times for bringing it my way.
Hot damn, Gifune has written one heck of a disturbing novel.

In a torrential downpour, Phil, Jamie and Martin—three teenage boys—encounter a strange and enigmatic man covered in horrible scars who will change their lives, their destinies and the very fate of their souls forever. When their encounter leads to murder, they realize this eerie stranger may not have been a man at all, but something much more…
Thirty years later the boys—now men—lead tormented lives filled with horrifying memories of the scarred man. Phil is a struggling writer, divorced, with a daughter and a mounting drinking problem. Jamie is a defrocked priest with depraved secrets and horrible addictions, and Martin, a madman who thinks himself a god, has vanished into a desolate desert region of Mexico and established a feared and violent blood cult. When Martin’s dying mother hires Phil to find her son and bring him home, Phil embarks on a perilous journey that will take him from the seedy streets of Tijuana, to a dangerous and allegedly haunted stretch of desert Mexican road known as The Corridor of Demons. At the end of the road, in an old and previously abandoned church, Martin and his followers wait in the Hell-on-Earth they’ve created deep in the desert. There will be only one chance for redemption, one chance for salvation, and one chance to stop the rise of an antichrist’s bloody quest for demonic power.
From the void, came chaos. These are its children.

I plan on framing Saying Uncle and hanging it on my living room wall. I will drape a string of Christmas lights around it that will twinkle whenever I'm reading a Gifune masterpiece.
When people enter my home they will fall to their knees before this framed book, or they will not enter. And I will curse them as they exit my dwelling.
Saying Uncle was a POWERFUL story. I need to let all that was involved in it sink in before I can head over to Amazon and write a review for it. Wow.
... Don't worry, everyone ... I'm not turning into a crazed Gifune stalker ...
But then anything is possible ...
(Seriously, if I ever come on and announce that I'm getting a tattoo of Greg's head on my chest, then worry ... and arrange an intervention. But don't try taking my Gifune books away.)

I was packing it away last night, getting it ready to send to a friend, and while I was holding it all the emotion I felt while reading it came flooding back. A very powerfull book!
I started Deep Night last night and got about 100 pages in. I'll post more on it later.

A Powerful, Nostalgic Story That You Will Never Forget.
Saying Uncle is a novella length story that packs the same kind of punch that you will get from reading a nine-hundred page epic. It’s a coming of age tale loaded with violence, rage, sadness, and love that will stick around inside your mind for a long time after you’ve turned the final page.
It’s the story of one young man’s love for an Uncle who is not only a loving father figure to the boy and his sister, but also a mysterious man with a violent past. When something terrible happens to his sister, God help the person the who committed the crime.
A story of finding yourself, and also losing yourself in a world that is brutally unforgiving, as well as emotionally gripping on every single page. Gifune’s stories all read like he kept them simmering in his mind for a long time before setting them to paper. He writes with such deep feeling and poetic energy, that at times he leaves you breathless.
In Saying Uncle, Greg Gifune writes with all the passion and brilliant writing that his fans have come to know in his other masterpieces like, Children of Chaos, Blood In Electric Blue and The Bleeding Season. His name is one that is fast gaining the popularity it deserves and you’ll find yourself buying all his other books and treasuring them.
There are certain books that leave you with a heartfelt feeling, making you always regard them with special emotion for the rest of your life; Saying Uncle is one of those books.
Read it, treasure it, and discover the amazing imagination of Greg F. Gifune.
