I liked this one. There was some typical and some unique type horror here. It was a story of a drunk drug addict who went away for a while to sober up. When he comes back to his small town everyone is gone. The story covers his search. I won't tell you much more in case you haven't read it yet. But I actually enjoyed his writing. He is pretty good at making you see what you are reading.
Story #2 Eliminate the Improbable by Nick Mamatas
So the blurb on the back of the book made me think of CSI. I was pretty excited about that. But this story wrecked my brain. Not in a good way either. The more I kept reading the more I got bored....and confused.... and my mind started to wander. In fact I even thought about putting it down to go do the dishes.... my least favorite chore in the house. But it would have been more fun then finishing this story. I don't mind wacky. I don't mind weird. I don't mind strange. But mix them all up together and pretend it is a story and no freaking thank you. Sigh
Story #3 Borealis by Ronald Damien (real middle name by the way) Malfi
I liked this one too. So two out of three made the book worth it. Imagine being stuck in the middle of no where with something evil. Nothing you can do to stop it. (Think deadliest catch meets horror) This guy can write. This is the second book I have read by him.... or should it be story? .... that I have liked. I look forward to the next one.
Brian chose the authors and then, according to my reading of the introduction, was the editor of the stories. The authors submitted the stories and Brian edited them. I would think if he felt one wasn't up to snuff, Brian would have no problems saying so.
I started the first story last night. I should finish sometime this weekend.

Got this today. Looks great. I'm looking forward to all three of these stories. I've only read Malfi before, so I'm hoping McBean and Mamatas are good as well.
I know Keene was the editor, but it would have been nice if he had story in with these.
And the cover of this book is what Nanci would look like if somene tried to take any of her books.

I just started this earlier tonight, and so far, I'm really liking the first story by Bret McBean, Sins of The Father. This guy can write pretty damned good. I've had my eye on a novel of his called The Last Motel; I think I'm gonna make it one of the books I buy this month, because I really like this story so far.
I'll post back with thoughts on the next story by Mamatas. It'll seem like I'm reading this slow because I've got a bunch of other books I'm reading at the same time. It drives me nuts; it's like I'm not happy unless I'm trying to read seven books at a time. I can never just read a couple books at one time, like a normal reader.
The next author, Nick Mamatas, I've never heard of; this is the first time I've even seen his name. McBean I'd heard of before, and Malfi, of course. So, I'm really hoping the Mamatas story blows me away as well. It kicks ass when you find new authors this way in a small anthology.
And let's not forget to thank the editor for these stories, too.

I enjoyed all three stories. The McBean and Malfi offerings are fairly straight-forward tales, but they are executed quite well. But, and I could be way off base here, I think they share a common thread with each other and the Nick Mamatas tale.
I took the Mamatas tale to be about the horror of losing one's sense of self. I see some of the same in the other two stories, but McBean and Malfi explore it in a slightly different way, whereas Mamatas says "Here it is in all its glory." A lot of books in the last few years explore this same issue, I believe, including some by Piccirilli, Braunbeck and Waggoner.
I also think that the Mamatas story is going to be one of those that you either love or hate, there is no middle ground with it.
But like I said, I could be completely and utterly wrong. It's just my interpretation of them.
Well, I can finally discuss this book. It was one of the reviews I wrote for Nanci in Horrorworld and it is now up.
Hello, I agree with you on the middle story. It was a very difficult read for me, a bit too surreal for my tastes. I do wonder if all of Mamata's stories are written in the same style.
But I really liked the other two story's a lot. My favorite being the last one, Malfi's. Though they are miles apart, it did remind me of the time I spent reading Dan Simmon's The Terror and Scott Faulkner's The Feast Of Catchville. Great winter time reading!
Though I have heard of Malfi and had purchased Passenger, I had not heard of McBean and I look forward to hear what Horrordude thought of The Last Motel (sorry if you already wrote about it H.D., if so, I missed it.)

Tt, I thought Sins of The Father was a really creepy story, and yes, it made me run out and grab The Last Motel.
The Last Motel is definitely Laymon-type horror. Brett McBean doesn't hide the fact that Laymon was a huge idol to him. In the introducton, Brian Keene calls McBean, Richard Laymon on speed, but also points out that Brett has his own style, and his own voice, despite his paying homage to the great Laymon.
The Last Motel is like a 1970's horror flick, and I even commented to Brett over on his board that I thought it would be insane if somebody like Tobe Hooper were to make a movie of The Last Motel. I think Brett stated he even wanted the title to sound like it was from that era of films, like The Last House On The Left, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ... The Last Motel.
It has a really nice build up of tension, different people arriving at this motel out in the middle of nowhere, all with some bad bit of violence going on with them, all on this same night the novel takes place. Saying more about all that might breed a spoiler, so I'll just say everything comes together towards the end, and there are a lot of things happening at the end that I never saw coming.
So, I would tell anyone who likes a good Laymon type setting, with a fresh new voice in horror fiction, should definitely check out The Last Motel by Brett McBean.

I ordered it as soon as I read Laurel's comments awhile back. I just can't pass up that lady's reviews since her tastes seem to be darn parallel to mine when it comes to great books. Put that on top to comparisons to Richard Laymon, and man, I am so in. Now if only my copy would get hereā¦
