I got my copy yesterday. I turned my wife on to Keene (wait, that sounds weird lol) with Ghoul last year and she also read Dark Hollow and liked it. She was looking at Castaways last night and I think we may fight over who gets to read it first!
I figured Castaways would be good.... after all, it has the Keene Lucky Hand in it (all books with said hand seem to do commercially well i.e. The Rising, etc... )

I'll be done with Dead Sea in a couple days, and I was then going to read either Ghoul or Terminal for my next Keene, but since I haven't heard one bad thing about Castaways, it might have to be that.
So far I think Dead Sea rocks, but I'm not turning the pages as fast as I did with The Rising, or Conqueror Worms. But I still have the last 150 pages to read, and with Brian Keene, anything can happen in that amount of page time ...
Like loads of psycho sea zombies munching on people's brains!

well, I read Castaways.
It's a big improvement on Ghost Walk but I think it's still a long way from the highs of Dark Hollow, Conqueror Worms, Ghoul and Dead Sea.
Shame he couldn't use the actual Beast House monsters as mentioned in the author's note at the end. That would have been cool.

Things I liked: Thought the creatures raping was a good touch. Very Laymon like and provided some good squrim moments. Thought it was cool how Mathew was introduced as a prominent character, built up into looking like he was going to be a major player then quickly killed off. Bit of a James Herbert touch in some ways. Fast paced. Rumps.
Things I didn't like: The Iron Maiden scene. Didn't work and was just too silly and forced that it took me out of the story. Some of the death scenes were over a bit too quick. Didn't think it was very realistic for Troy to pretend that Stefan was already dead so that the pilots would leave him behind, just because of a few personality clashes.
Were the Cthulhu cave drawing and strange dead snake/worm thing meant to be tie ins to Conqueror Worms? I hope that in future novels, Brian Keene expands on these tie ins he often does and really makes something of the Universe he's linking to in his books. Some of these little clues are a bit of a tease.

I didn't dig the whole romance deal between the two main characters (don't remember their names). I understand it was necessary to the story, but...it just seems so unnatural and stiff to me. That problem usually shows up for me when reading Laymon as well. The minute a couple of the characters strike up a romance, my stomach rolls, because I know I'm in for a few hundred pages peppered with poor, romantic comedy relationship bits.
