Terminal by Brian Keene
It's near the top of my TBR pile. I think I started it once and put it down when another book caught my attention. I will get back to it though... Brian is one of my favorites.

I never pay too much attention to bad reviews about authors I think are already really good, but I've seen a lot of people complain about Terminal. Mostly on Amazon, I think, though I could be wrong. I visit a lot of sites and read a lot of reviews.
I plan on reading this one regardless.

It is one of my favorite Keene books. It is in a four-way tie with The Rising, The Conquerer Worms, and Ghoul. I had heard and recently read in Cemetery Dance #59 that he was required to change the book. Originally the kid was suppose to be the second coming of Christ. I hope someday that the original work is printed!!!!
When I read it, it depressed the hell out of me. And then I realized that it wasn't the story itself that bothered me. The story was emotional and resounding. What had been bugging me was the fact that I could recognize a little of my family, from years ago, in Tommy's. We did live almost paycheck to paycheck, but never got quite as bad as Tommy's family.

I got mine today, too.
Castaways looks good, but I need to read Conqueror Worms and Dead Sea before I get to that one.
Soultaker looks cool. I've never read anything by Bryan Smith. I have Queen of Blood, but I need to read House of Blood first. I hate when Leisure sends out a sequel, because there's always the chance you didn't read the first one, or don't even have it, and then it sits in your tbr pile until you grab the other.
They pulled the same thing with Ghost Walk; I still need to grab Dark Hollow.

I've gotten a buddy at work to read some Keene and Laymon. He liked the Keene stuff, but can't bring himself to read Conqueror Worms because of the title or Terminal because there's no "monster" in it. He was so-so on Laymon, liking One Rainy Night and The Woods Are Dark, but not Beware. He seems to like his human killers on the screen and bigger badder monsters in books. I'm working on him on CW, though.

Hey, Thad, or Craig, or whoever might read this post first: without writing in a spoiler, because I haven't read it yet, does Keene's Ghoul have anything to do with serial killers?
I was browsing through people's lists on Amazon, and some guy had Ghoul thrown in his list with a bunch of serial killer novels, but he gave no explanation. I've read a lot of reviews on Ghoul and have never heard anyone mention anything about a serial killer in the book.
Just curious.

One of Michael Slade's early Special X books was also called Ghoul. The Special X books, while not really horror, are a bit beyond mysteries and might appeal to some horror fans.
Terminal and Take the Long Way Home are my top 2 favorite Keene novels. I think a lot of the negative reviews you see on Amazon are from the zombie freaks. They didn't take well to a non-zombie novel methinks.

I'm half way through this, and I think this Keene guy can write anything he wants and it will turn out good.
So far, I'm finding Keene's writing about the cancer to be excellent; he uses gross, bizarre descriptions to highlight just how miserable it is. There were a couple paragraphs where I stopped and said, "Damn ..."
But I'll admit, I'm still floored by the great batch of stories in Unhappy Endings. I'm sure I'll be going back to those stories a bunch of times in the years to come.
