I've stayed in Utica and driven that highway (Rt 90) from Utica to the Mass border, then the Mass Pike from Strockbridge To Boston so many times that my eyes glazed over when he mentioned it in this book.
(A nod above to James Taylor. I would always have this c.d. in my car and play it when I was close to Stockbridge.)
New York State has some really bad areas, northern N.Y. being some of the worst (poorest) I've ever seen, but Utica is just so freaking awful and I feel so bad for all the people living there. There's a canal that runs along the highway where its said a whole bunch of bodies are thrown into from Mafia killings. Utica to me feels like a city that just gave up.
I'm sure there's more to it than the portions I've seen and there may even be some pretty good area's. Plus its been about 5 years since I've been there so they may have done some work to it, but even still, I bet its not a city I would want to spend a whole lot of time in.
Got the book yesterday and I'm up to page 101, I had to read through the sex scene. Which by the way was written perfectly for the book. No acrobatics, nothing kinky, just good ole fashinoned lust. I loved it.
I have to admit I didn't enjoy the story line. However, the writing was spot on and the flow of the book was great. I will be reading another book by Greg because of that.
This storyline wasn't my cup of tea. I just had a hard time getting into the whole drunk goes into the desert after the antichrist vibe. I think I have a thing against religion in the books I read Even though it wasn't really religion nor was it crammed down your throat.. hmmm. I guess being involved with someone who went over the deep end religion wise kind of makes these types of books not for me.
Like I said before though, based on the quality of the writing and the storytelling abilities shown to me in this book I will be getting a next one from this new author for me.
First off let me apologize for totally over simplifying the plot of this book in my last post. I thought about that on the way to work. It is not as simple as I stated it.

Tt, On Utica, yeah it's in rough shape and has a rough history (and a vast history of organized crime). Though I was born and raised in Massachusetts, my family is originally from Utica, and I still have a lot of family there and in the nearby New Hartford area. My family has ties to the city going back to the early 1900s. I haven't been back in several years, but do return now and then to visit. The city has made several attempts at a comeback, maybe one of these times it'll take. It's essentially a working-class, tough little city, and it seemed a good fit for the lead character in CHAOS.
Oh, and I got one of those Neti Pots, going to give it a try tonight.
And Hellolost, thanks for picking up a copy of CHAOS, hopefully you'll find some of my other novels more to your taste.

Oh man, now Tt has got Greg Gifune involved in this weird Neti Pot cult.
He doesn't need a Neti Pot, he's The High Priest of Horror, man! Germs and flu bugs run home scared and cry to their mommies when they come face to face with his greatness.
(Hey, Tt, I already got Blood In Electric Blue. I ordered it for two bucks more at Amazon, and they must've dropped it from an airplane over my house or something, because it got here in two days. I was wondering if you wound up ordering it from Horror Mall?)

I got it from the HorrorMall H.D. For some unGodly reason, it takes almost two weeks for anything they send me to arrive at my doorstep. Nowadays, I frequent them because I am loyal and I really love what they do, but heck, I really do get tired of waiting.

Tt, I've been ordering more from Horror Mall lately, but like you said, it takes about a week to get to me, so when it's a book I can't wait for, I use Amazon.
And when you read Blood In Electric Blue, you'll be shocked, stunned and amazed as always with a book by The High Priest.
The blurb on the front of Blood In Electric Blue is from a guy named Tom Piccirilli ... I had to think, can you imagine being a writer and having The Pic Man praise your book?
It looks kick ass on the cover: one genius praising another one.
Here's the actual blurb:
"Greg Gifune knows how to chill your blood ... I am a big fan, and you should be too." -Tom Piccirilli, Author of The Dead Letters

Pic was kind enough to do that blurb for me and was also nice enough to do the Intro for Saying Uncle. Not only is he an amazing writer and one of my personal favorites, he's one of the nicest and most generous people in this business, and has been a good friend to me. Great writer and a great guy.
