A Brief History of the Internet by Nanci

The internet's original intention was to ensure comminications across the US if we were to be attacked. Remember, all of our nuclear capabilities (rockets, etc) are out in the midwest. They would be the first targets of a nuclear strike against the US (not DC or NY as most people think). The idea was that if we couldn't communicate "across" the US, we could re-route communications from the East Coast to the West Coast through the Upper Midwest, Southwest, Alaska and other strategic locals.

1958 Eisenhower commissions DARPA (Defense Department Advance Research Projects Agency) in response to the launching of Sputnick. DARPA spawns ARPA.

The idea for packet-switching networks was originally concieved by Leonard Kleinrock (a professor at MIT) in 1961. Actually we could go back a little further than that (but it would be counter-productive since Kleinrock's theories are more accurate than the earlier thesis - Liedecker's work (Man-Computer Symbiosis) was more "sci-fi" than science IMHO). In 1962, Liedecker and Clark theorized actual "networking" and Liedecker went on to head ARPNet (Andvanced Research Project Agency). At the same time, Paul Baron at RAND was building on Kleinrock's theories and developing Distributed Communications Networks.

1965 - 1968 the theory of an "internet" or communications network was coming to reality and in 1968 ARPA sent out RFP's for building the first four nodes of the network.

In 1969 the first four nodes were built at UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UCSB, and University of Utah. Funny enough, during the very first communication, the system "crashed."

During the 70's Vince Cerf, Bob Metcalf, Bob Kahn, Larry Roberts and others refine the internet by developing FTP, TelNet, TCP and NVP technologies.

Cool piece of trivia: in 1976 Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom sends out an e-mail

1979 brought us USENET.

1982 TCP/IP replaces NCP (and the "internet" as we know it, comes alive).

1983 ARPAnet splits and becomes ARPA and MILNet

All sorts of cool stuff happens during the 80's including a "worm" that affects 6,000 of the 60,000 nodes on the internet.

Alas, in 1990 ARPAnet ceases but a new "internet" is born

In 1991 Tim Berners-Lee develops WWW (world wide web-the way we see exchange and share information on the internet today).

In the late 90's the internet "exploded" - new initiatives, new business and new paradigms were created around this new technology.

And that, my friends, is a very brief history of the internet.

Cool factoid #2 - my dad worked for Bell Labs (as a subcontractor of the DoD) on the East Coast Missle Defense System in the early 60's. The Defense System was built on the back of the then DARPA network.

Of course, my post was a JOKE...sort of like saying this reminds me of that scene in Stephen King's "The Haunting of Hill House" would have been...

I try to check facts, and if I have determined NOT to check, usually find a way to omit making a blunder by glossing over or stepping around things I don't know.

Hey -- lay off my pal Al!! He never said he invented the internet. What he said was:

During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

In other words, he help fund the building of the internet as we knew it back in the late 90's

Seriously -- you people!!!
