Can A Book Drive You To Kill?

Well, if you were going to kill someone....a book would be a pretty good way to get some idea's on how to do it.

I guess you have already figured I'm researching a story/novel plot ...

It would be perfect if I could market it first as an audio book...if it became a best-seller people would always wonder...

This reminds me of the arguments about heavy metal music causing suicides.

No book, game, movie, tv show, song or band is THE cause. Some of them, like tv or video games, can desensitize people to the violence around us, but I don't think it causes it. We've added the v-chip to television sets, ratings to video games and music and tv shows, and specified the reasons for ratings on movies and I don't think it's done a bit of good.

People will soak up what they want and disregard the rest. You can only hope that they are smart enough to know right from wrong, or that their parents taught them to know what's right or wrong. If neither case is true, then you hope there is someone within that person's sphere of influence who is willing to help them.

My two cents.

I think, if a person is in a troubled mental state, anything can set them off. Whether it be a Stephen King novel, a Marilyn Manson album, or a section from the Book of Revelations. The moment we start holding the artists responsible is the day free speech dies (just my opinion).

Thad, being a metalhead from the age of 12, I remember all those bogus cases on metal.

Two kids listening to a Judas Priest album-and also drunk and stoned-walked to a park near their home to commit suicide. The first kid blew his head off and the second botched the job and wound up a brain dead.

The Priest album was one of their best, Stained Class, and I must say when I was a young, troubled teen, I had many a night when everything was coming down on me and listened to that album drunk and depressed a million times and never felt the urge to blow my head off.

There was a huge trial, metal went on trial, no one could prove Judas Priest had any hidden messages in the song, and they were cleared.

The other most noteable one, was Ozzy. The killer tune Suicide Solution off of Blizzard of Ozz. Another kid, depressed out of his mind, locked himself in his room and listened to this song day and night for a week, then shot himself in the head. And Ozzy was cleared.

What's funny about the Ozzy tune, is that it was a song warning people of the dangers of alcohol abuse; Ozzy wrote it with Randy Rhodes after Bon Scott, the singer for AC/DC had died from an alcohol overdose. They were trying to say there was a part in the song where Ozzy says, "Get the gun shoot", but once again it wasn't proven.

My biggest complaint on all this? Why would any metal band want to kill their fans????!!!!!! Without the fans the band would be nothing!!!! Duh!!

Another case of people having to have their heads removed from their asses.

I'd be very interested to see what would happen if some psycho took out a bunch of people, and then attributed it to the Bible. I'm willing to bet no one would be calling for that book to be pulled off the shelves.

Good point, DGM. When nutjobs like Jim Jones and David Koresh pulled what they did, you didn't see everyone saying the Bible warped their minds.

Every time I see a documentary on Jim Jones that guy always freaks me out. I mean, feeding poison-laced punch to a little kid is something any sicko can pull off, but how the hell did he convince all those adults to just walk up there and drink their lives away like that?

He always had those spooky looking sunglasses on. That dude was nuttier than a fruitcake late for a Christmas Eve party.
