Clowns have never scared me; I just find them eternally stupid. What is funny about wearing garish makeup and falling down a lot? Come to think of it, I never liked Absolutely Fabulous either.

Praying mantises would scare me if they were six feet tall.

I'm a ventriloquist (I did it professionally for some time in my misplaced youth and actually got paid surprisingly well for it, considering I wasn't a well-known celebrity-type) with two ventriloquist figures -- Chester and Dennis. I haven't done it for about twenty-five years (I dropped it as soon as I sold my first book and poured all my time into writing) so I've gotten rusty, but I've been seriously considering brushing up on my "belly-talking", taking it up again and maybe making some extra cash with it. One of these days, I'll muster the courage to perform at a convention.

As for clowns ... I have a T-shirt that says "Can't sleep, clowns will eat me," and I wear it frequently. John Wayne Gacy was a clown, and Emmett Kelly shot JFK, RFK, and Matin Luther King. Clowns're fucking creepy.

There are some very creepy clown scenes in Ramsey Campbell's book The Grin of the Dark. I also remember that the bad guy from the old movie, Night of the Demon (from M.R. James short story, "The Casting of the Runes") had a scene where he was dressed as a clown handing to entertain a bunch of children.

Nope. When I was teaching I used to catch them on the playground and let them crawl up my arm. Impromptu science... the kids loved it.
