I'm only about halfway through it, but man, this is a good book! The set up is very long, you don't even meet the main characters (at least I think they are the main charactures) until about halfway through. It's old school writing meaning the sex isn't very explicit (but its there) and the violence while gory isn't extreme. But if a story is written well, you don't have to rely on the extreme to make it an interesting read. The novel was written in 1981 but due to the setting (late 1920's - late 1930's) it doesn't read like its dated from that time period. I had to laugh while reading one part, a couple has a chance to purchase a huge farm for only $ 2,000 and to them its a lot of money.
While looking this up I saw that it was a movie staring Ronnie Cox. I remembered seeing this after reading the plot summery. It was at the drive-in and I remember it being pretty entertaining.
Below is a plot summary from the movie off of Wikipedia:
<<<<While driving through Mississippi on their honeymoon, Caroline and Eli MacCleary (Bibi Besch and Ronny Cox) are stranded on a deserted road when their car breaks down. Eli is forced to walk several miles down the road to a service station they stopped at earlier to get a tow. While he is gone, Caroline is attacked and raped by a mysterious creature.
Seventeen years later, their son Michael (who was conceived as a result of Caroline's rape) has become gravely ill, and the doctors have no idea what is causing the sickness, only that a pituitary gland has gone out of control. Theorizing that the sickness might be genetic, Eli and Caroline finally confront the past and return to the small town where she was attacked to hopefully discover some information about the man who assaulted her. The local townspeople are reluctant to help, with both the newspaper editor and the town judge brushing aside their questions. But then Eli and Caroline hear a story about a local man who was murdered 17 years earlier, his body partially eaten and his house almost burned down.
Meanwhile Michael has escaped from the hospital and returned to the same town, unbeknownst to his parents. His personality undergoes a frightening transformation, and he quickly begins to attack and kill specific people in the community, including the paper editor and the local mortician, both of whom were related to each other.
After several more revelations, including the discovery of a swamp filled with bodies whose bones show signs of having been gnawed on, Caroline and Eli finally discover the terrible truth about the creature that attacked her those many years ago. And what's worse, it appears that the creature is about to be reborn through Michael, and its murderous actions are the direct consequence of a carefully concealed secret.>>>>>

I saw the movie when I was a kid. It was pretty creepy, but I remember being far more frightened by the video box cover. I should see if I can find a pic of the cover on the web somewhere and post it here. I'm curious to see if I still find it scary.

It always sounded like an interesting idea, but for some reason I thought it was a novelization of the film, so avoided it like a wet pustule. If it's an original novel I might look at again.
The Beast Within is a 1982 horror film directed by Phillipe Mora. Screenplay by Tom Holland, based on the novel by Edward Levy. Starring Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Paul Clemens, L.Q. Jones, Don Gordon, R.G. Armstrong, Katherine Moffat, Meschach Taylor.
The film is a very loose adaptation of Edward Levy's 1981 novel. The screenplay was written by Tom Holland, his first feature film script. It was dismissed by critics upon release as being cheap and exploitative. In more recent years it has gained a cult following.

I finished it last night and all in all I could recommend this book to just about anybody.
Remember what I said about the sex? Well that changed after the first half. While still tame by todays standards it gave a pretty good description of a "hand job", you don't see that in novels anymore!
The second half moved along very fast, though not as fast as the first half. There was a lot of set up as the young baby grew up to become a teenager, but the payoff was pretty good if not very original.
It may have been somewhat fresh in the early 80's but now the very ending (the last page) is a yawner. How many times have you seen a movie where everything appears to be over and the main character turns to look at the screen....then gives you an evil smile? Or their eyes turn red? The last page in this book isn't that bad, but smiliar.
Also, at one point in the book a girl says the following:
Girl: "Michael, I've got something to tell you, I missed my....."
Michael: "Look, tell me later, I've got more important things to think about.
Now...what do you think she missed? In the early 80's this might have gone by some people, but nowadays, readers would chuckle knowing what she missed.
But it was a really good, and fast read. The writing is very good, the plot while not original had enough different things in it to make it enjoyable, and it had a pretty good ending which I did not expect (except for the epilog on the last page).
The cover of the novel was very scary..it was an actual photograph of the main character standing in the woods, and he looked insane, like he could chew your face off, and his hands were sort of hooked into claws. Burrr.....if I was a young kid, maybe around nine years old, that cover would have stayed with me for the rest of my life. Maybe it would have made me emotionally unstable. I might have had to move to Canada, you know way up north and get away from everybody. Lead a solitary life with just my family. Maybe write horror novels to get this cover outta my head. Nah....
