I agree completely. I loved the bleak ending and the weirdness of it as well. Also, like you said, a wonderful journey getting there.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2015

Books read and recommended for January, 2015.
Hard cover -
1. Hag by John Goodrich from Thunderstorm Books. Well written supernatural story of slavery, love and cancer.
2. King of the Bastards by Steven Shrewsbury and Brian Keene from Thunderstorm Books. More of The Labyrinth is revealed with many thrills and battles in the sword & sorcery vein. A real blast.
3. It’s Only Death by Lee Thompson from DarkFuse. Crime murder mystery with nothing supernatural or terribly horrific (other than death and crime in reality style). Well written but not much suspense or thrills. (digital only so far)
4. Horrible Gods by Wrath James White from Sinister Grin Press. Very good collection of religious and/or deity related stories.
5. Revival by Stephen King from Scribner. A wonderfully horrifying addition to the Lovecraft mythos.
6. A Little Black Book of Horror Tales by Dennis Etchison from Borderlands. Wonderful well-written reprint stories. Would have enjoyed some original ones too.
7. Jagger by Kristopher Rufty from Sinister Grin Press. Good action packed story. Ending a bit disappointing and would have liked more on the dog fighting dudes and their drugs. (digital only so far)
8. Masters of Blood and Bone by Craig Saunders from DarkFuse. Tried to get into this but the ponderous plot and non-compelling plot and characters won out. (digital only so far)
9. The Hallow by Keith Deininger from DarkFuse. Nice premise but not well developed and a disappointing ending.(digital only so far)
10. The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice from Yen Press. YA story that was well written but I’d like it to be nastier.
11. Strange Ways by Bryan Smith from Thunderstorm Books. Witches and townsfolk doing nasty things. Some things are worse than witches. Possible the best witch story I’ve ever read.
12. Condemned by Michael McBride from Thunderstorm Books. Another page turner from McBride. Possibly his most depressing book ever - I loved it.
13. Tormentor by William Meikle from DarkFuse. Cool premise with an eerie Lovecraftian feel to this mystery. However, seems like the author had no finale so he just torched it all. (digital only so far)
14. The Deep by Nick Cutter from Gallery Books. Creepy, claustrophobic tale that shreds dread and ends with horror.

Paperback -
15. Cupid in Bondage by Wrath James White from Deadite Press. Good stuff if you are into BMSD.

Digital -
16. Trigger Warnings by Brian Keene. Love this stuff. Wonderfully insightful, emotional and so true.
17. Afterburn by Tim Curran from Severed Press. Almost too much action here and was too repetitious. Would have been a better novella.

Other -
18. The Seven: The Labyrinth, Book One - Chapter One-Three by Brian Keene.“"Everything dies, but not everything has an ending."
19. Cemetery Dance Magazine #72. An excellent issue other than that the 2 headline stories are reprints from one of CD’s own books.

Favorites = #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18 and 19.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2015

Books read and recommended for February, 2015.
Hard cover -
1. The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All by Laird Barron from Night Shade Books. A Wonderful collection.
2. Doll Face by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Worst story I’ve read from Curran. Filled with detailed descriptions of gore, horrific sex, and torture with some plot and very little characterization. It’s a novel but at best should have been a novelette. (digital only so far)
3. Flesh and Coin by Craig Saunders from DarkFuse. Quick novella that offers little horror, suspense, mystery, thrills or catchy characters. ho hum (digital only so far)
4. The Eye That Blinds by B. E. Skully from DarkFuse. Great premise and character development in this horror mystery. However, the ending was awful as nothing was explained and it just leaves you hanging. (digital only so far)

Digital -
5. Apex Magazine #69 from Apez. Some good ones.
6. The Lurking Season by Christopher Rufty from Samhain. Great sequel to ‘The Lurkers’. Character driven horror with influences from Rick Hautala’s ‘Little Brothers’, Ed Lee, Jack Ketchum, Richard Laymon and Tim Curran. Bring on another one.
7. Shrieks and Shivers from the Horror Zine edited by Jeani Rector from Post Mortem Press. Inconsistent with a few good ones.
8. SNAFU: Heroes: An Anthology of Military Horror by Jonathan Maberry, Weston Ochse, James A. Moore and Joseph Nassie from Cohesion Press. Excellent anthology.

Other -
9. What Rough Beast by James A. Moore and Charles R. Rutledge from White Noise Press. Awesome thriller chapbook with bloodthirsty werewolves.

Favorites = #1, 6, 8 and 9.

Books read and recommended for March, 2015.
Hard cover -
1. Eerie Archives: Volume Eighteen from Dark Horse Books. Another cool anthology.
2. The Dunfield Terror by William Meikle from DarkFuse. Derivative and not very captivating. (digital only so far)
3. Retreat by J. F. Gonzalez from Thunderstorm Books. Great horror, thriller, suspense, murder-mystery. Ties into many previous works by Jesus.
4. Blood Kin by Ronald Kelly from Thunderstorm Books. Good old fashioned vampires done right with character-driven prose.
5. A Little White Book of Ghost Stories by Rick Hautala from Borderlands Press. A varied and well-written collection of ghostly tales.
6. After Midnight by Allan Leverone from DarkFuse. Good sequel to Mr. Midnight. Creepy and scary with good characters. (digital only so far)
7. Slowly We Rot by Bryan Smith from Thunderstorm Books. Best story Smith has ever published. Page-turning, emotional, apocalyptic, zombie thriller.
8. Dead Eyes by Michael McBride from Thunderstorm Books. Early McBride that displays his knack for a good story.

Paperback -
9. Under Cover of Night by Mary SanGiovanni from Flesh & Blood Press.

Digital -
10. Cruelty #9 by Edward Lorn. Steaming towards the conclusion. Way fun. Screaming toward the conclusion.
11. Perverse Humanity by Kyle Lybeck from CreateSpace. Some good ones here. Some great ideas. Some endings need work. Fun collection.
12. To Save Her by Robert Smartwood. Good short story.
