Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for July, 2014.
Hard cover -
108. Eerie Archives: Volume Sixteen from Dark Horse. These comics rock.
109. The Sleeping Dead by Richard Farren Barber from DarkFuse. Very engaging story. Frantic terror from within and without. Heading toward a climax with the reader much in need of release but then the story just ends as if the author couldn’t think of any explanation for the goings on. Great idea with a bad ending. (digital only so far)
110. A Beautiful Madness by Lee Thompson from DarkFuse. Couldn’t get in to this one. Characters are not interesting. (digital only so far)
111. Vampirella Archives: Volume Nine from Dark Horse. I love the non-Vamperella stories.
112 . Halfway House by Weston Ochse from JournalStone. What do Elvis, gangs, comic books, family and a thriller have in common? With Ochse it’s a great story and fulfilling conclusion. (digital only so far)
113. Blackout by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Grabs you in the first paragraph and never let’s go. Just try and escape these alien collection machines in Curran’s take on War of the Worlds. (digital only so far)
114. Creepy Archives: Volume Nineteen from Dark Horse. Excellent.

Paperback -
115. Shades of Reality by Leigh Haig from Gallows Press. Very good first novella from a new author. Parental fear for their babies well being drive this page-turner along with good characterization. However, some unique plotting and a couple cool twists leading to a satisfying climax cement this as an author to watch for.

Digital -
116. What the Dark Brings by Edward Lorn. Big collection of shorts. Good stuff.
117. Toilet Baby by Shane McKenzie. Bizarre for sure. Not my fav of McKenzie’s but still fun.
118. Operation: Ice Bat edited by Brian Keene. Consistently good anthology with hard-hitting stories and some great twist endings.

Other -
119. Cozzy’s Question by Bob Booth and Matt Bechtel from White Noise Press.

Support Indie Horror Publishers and Enjoy.

121. The Children of Old Leech edited by Ross E. Lockhart & Justin Steele from Word Horde.
122. Sunblind by Michael McBride from DarkFuse. A stunning page-turner displaying McBride’s mastery of the reality/horror genre with creatures so frightening a deadly desert trek is welcome in comparison. One of the best novels of the year. I need a drink. (digital only so far)
123. Something Terrible by Wrath James White and Sultan Z. White from Thunderstorm Books. Excellent anthology of thrilling heart-stabbing stories.
124. Chupacabra Chronicles by Raegan Butcher from Thunderstorm Books. Huge action -filled monster fun. In fact, almost too much action but the characters and humor cover it.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for September, 2014.
Hard cover -
134. Conduits by Jennifer Loring from DarkFuse. Creepy conglomeration of science and fantasy about death and sorrow. A bit weak on characterization but strong on atmosphere.
135. Dinner with the Cannibal Sisters by Douglas Clegg from Cemetery Dance. Well written novella. Quite atmospheric leaving the imagination to do its job from the books title.
136. Factory Town by Jon Bassoff from DarkFuse. A nasty, evil town created for the demented. A man looking for his daughter. He finds the terrible truth. (digital only so far)
137. A Little Aqua Book of Creature Tails by David J. Schow from Borderlands Press. Schow is a master and these are fun monster tales.
138. Surrogate by David Bernstein from DarkFuse. Exciting page-turner. A clone, a kid and a nightmare for mom. Well done but the ending came too fast and even though loose ends were tied up was a bit disappointing. (digital only so far)
139. The Last Mile by Tim Waggoner FROM DarkFuse. Well done post-apocalyptic novella with good characters and a fine ending. (digital only so far)
140. Lucifer’s Lottery by Edward Lee from Cemetery Dance. One of the very few Lee stories I did not enjoy. Much grossness and repetition with some plot. Not sure what happened for like 150 pages. Seemed like the novella length would have been better.
141. The Final Girl by Brandon Ford from Thunderstorm Books. Took a while to get going but then it’s a real bloodbath. A scattered plot at times and some things made no sense but still a thrill.

Paperback -
142. Proud Parents by Kristopher Rufty from Samhain. How’d you like to have a monster for a child? Sound cool? Maybe, but then you might found out where the real monsters lurk.
143. Everything Leads Back to Alice by Chris Marrs from Bad Moon Books. Excellent novella from this new author. Love and life stretched by memories of loss but when found, horror strikes.

Digital -
144. The Morning Dew by Edward Lorn. Quick short story with scary scenes and ideas that ended too soon.
145. Spying on Gods by David G. Barnett from Necro. Well-woven horror with despicable happenings.
146. Collete and the Tiger by John Urbancik. Interesting well-written fantasy.
Mutator by Gary Fry from DarkFuse.
147. Hope for the Wicked: A Larry Laughlin Novella by Edward Lorn from Red Adept. Another horror/crime/thriller that makes me want more.
148. Mutator by Gary Fry from DarkFuse. Well written atmospheric, character-driven, alien monster horror novella. Good stuff.

Books read and recommended for October, 2014.
Hard cover -
149. Twelve Gauge by Ronald Kelly from Thunderstorm Books. Another fine work from Kelly. Supernatural events make this serial killer novel very intriguing.
150. Black Hat Jack by Joe R. Lansdale from Subterranean Press. Cowboys, pioneers and indians in the old West done as only Lansdale can. It’s a blast.
151. Ghosts of Eden by Keith Deininger from DarkFuse. This was hard to finish. Nothing compelling in plot or characterization. (digital only so far)
152. In the Shadows of Children by Alan Ryker from DarkFuse. The bogeyman is coming. Protect your child from your past. (digital only so far)
153. DarkFuse, Volume 2 edited by Shane Staley from DarkFuse. Six good horror shorts with satisfying endings.
154. Deathbringer by Bryan Smith from Thunderstorm Books. Crazy Smith ride to hell and back. A real blast, action-filled page-turner.
155. Birdbox by Michael Louis Calvillo from Bad Moon Books. A slow build to a page-turner. A family fights for their lives but what is their ancient enemy? One of the best novels of the year.
156. By Insanity of Reason by Lisa Morton and John R. Little from Bad Moon Books. Messes with your mind. Who is the murderer? Good stuff.
157. Angel Board by Kristopher Rufty from Thunderstorm Books. Character-driven novel where a guardian angel may not be what you were counting on.
158. A Shrill Keening by Ronald Malfi from DarkFuse. Godzilla is a wuss. Cthulhu rises or is it only a man’s insanity? (digital only so far)

Paperback -
159. The Family Tree by John Everson. Enthralling family. Felt like I was at the Inn. Predictable but creepy and with enough twists to keep me reading.
160. Like Thunder by Nate Southard fro Thunderstorm Books. Good novella from Southard. Drugs, sex, guns and thugs. You never know who your friends are.
161. Siege of Station 19 by Raegan Butcher from Necro. Non-stop murderous creatures action.

Digital -
162. Mister Glow-Bones and Other Halloween Tales by Ronald Kelly from Macabre Ink. Good collection of scary stories.

Other -
163. No Songs for the Stars by Mary SanGiovanni from White Noise Press. Gorgeous production and a fine story.
