Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for May, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Creepy Archives: Volume Eighteen from Dark Horse Books. Good stuff.
2. Pitfall by Ronald Kelly from Thunderstorm Books. Kelly really draws you into his stories. Good supernatural thriller and this ain’t the usual dog fighting.
3. Dark Father by James Cooper from DarkFuse. Horrific dissection of a man’s failing mind and life and the nasty effect on his family and an innocent child.
4. Savage by Gary Fry from DarkFuse. A brutally creepy novel with typical Fry good prose.
5. Deceiver by Kelli Owen from DarkFuse. Excellent character-driven murder mystery full of life, love and loss with a good ending.
6. The Myth of Falling by Charlee Jacob from Sinister Grin Press. Oh, the prose is so good! Each short short story is worth a thousand pictures. Essay IV: Barbarous Names alone is worth the price of admission.
7. Smoke and Mirrors edited by Richard Chizmar from Cemetery Dance. Interesting but I prefer prose stories over screenplays.
8. Deadlock by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Quick study of horrific isolation. What’s real? What’s not? Not for the claustrophobic. With a nice twist at the end.

Paperback -
9. Horror for Good - A Charitable Anthology: Volume 1 from Cutting Block Press. Authors include Joe R. Lansdale, Nate Southard, Ray Garton, Jeff Strand, Wrath James White, Jack Ketchum, F. Paul Wilson, Laird Barron and more. Excellent anthology.
10. Grunt Life by Weston Ochse from Solaris. Fantastic action thriller sci/fi. Almost feels like you’re there trying to save the world.
11. Frankenstorm by Ray Garton from Pinnacle. Good, fun horror thriller but the bonus novelette is superb with teen porn, murder, family strife, vigilantes and a great ending.
12. Sequel by Mark Allan Gunnells from Gallows Press. Very character-driven murder mystery. A good read.

Digital -
13. Legend of Kill Creek Woods by Brett Williams. Another bloody thriller with much fun.
14. Vile Blood by Max Wilde (Roger Smith). A very wild ride that improves the deeper you read. Great characterization and a thriller with a brutal beast to mix things up.
15. Savaging the Dark by Christopher Conlon from Evil Jester Press. Reminiscent of Jack Ketchum but with Conlon’s excellent prose and style that rocks. An excellent novel of a female teacher, her dead twin, an attraction to her 6th grade male student and then things go quite awry. An enthralling page-turner.

Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.

Support Indie Horror Publishers and Enjoy.

Books read and recommended for June, 2014.
Hard cover -
93. Pus Junkies by Shane McKenzie from ThunderStorm Books. This is a disgusting blast. Love the Author’s Note.
94. Blood, Sex, Slime & Chinese Food by Shane McKenzie from ThunderStorm Books. Four wonderful novellas including interesting Author’s Notes.
95. The Exiled by William Meikle from DarkFuse. Not much for suspense or thrills although a bit of horror resides here, but unfortunately no characters that grab you. (digital only so far)
96. Ceremony of Flies by Kate Jonez from DarkFuse. Great characterization makes a story come to life. Too bad that lacks here. Ho hum. (digital only so far)
97. The Spartak Trigger by Bryce Allen from Bedlam Press. Good, original sci/fi but I found the prose a bit difficult to read.
98. Elderwood Manor by Christopher Fulbright & Angeline Hawkes from DarkFuse. A father and son go back home to supernatural and human evils with a history that needs to be dealt with. Creepy stuff. (digital only so far)
99. Relic of Death by David Bernstein from DarkFuse. One of the best novellas of the year. Character driven page-turning horror mystery. Bring on a sequel. (digital only so far)
100. Deadlift by Craig Saunders from DarkFuse. Well written novella of loss, death, grief and life. With some interesting characters and a somber ending.

Digital -
101. Prank Night by Kristopher Rufty. Gets the reader hooked then goes on and on with senseless violence and concludes with an unsatisfying ending.
102. Decayed Etchings by Brandon Ford from Black Bed Sheet Books. A bund of fun stories with cool conclusions. Will read more by him.
103. Blood Games by Richard Laymon from 47North. So cool to find a Laymon novel I never read. Crazy college girls, a remote lodge and woods with scary people and characters that sizzle make this a fun Laymon read.
104. Bay’s End by Edward Lorn. A coming-of-age crime suspense thriller that is a real page turner. With whiffs of Ketchum and Burke, Lorn has a strong voice.
105. Cruelty: Episodes One-Five by Edward Lorn. Unique writing style. Puts it’s hooks in you. Doesn’t let go. Great characters. But I’ll never look at dolls the same. Need the final installment.

Other -
106. Splatterpunk zine #5 from Splatterpunk Press. Another winner. Love this mag.
107. Cemetery Dance #71. Excellent all fiction issue.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

I was reading my Signet paperback edition of Alfred Bester's "The Demolished Man" (a book I purchased for seventy-five cents in 1970 or so) when the dried glue in the binding gave up, and pages started falling out. This novel was the first one to win the Hugo Award for best novel of the year (1951 in this case) and deservedly so. It also deserved better than to be in pieces on my coffee table, so I went to ABE Books and ordered a leatherbound Easton Press edition in "fine" condition and will wait for it to arrive before continuing reading. "The Demolished Man" (as well as Bester's Tiger Tiger [The Stars My Destination], Starburst, and The Dark Side of the Earth are some of the finest, wittiest, most elegant, outrageous and flat-out best SF the Golden Age ever produced.
