Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for January, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Shivers VII edited by Richard Chizmar from Cemetery Dance. Another good anthology with a couple awesome ones.
2. The Grinding by Matt Dinniman from Necro. This actually blew me away with it’s unique style, creativity and thrills with great characters and plot twists galore. Very impressive.
3. Thumbprint by Jason Ciaramella and Vic Malhotra based on the novella by Joe Hill from IDW Publishing. Very good + good bonus story ‘Kodiak’.
4. Dream of the Serpent by Alan Ryker from DarkFuse. Well written and enthralling but needed more action and/or thrills to keep it going strong.
5. Turnaround by Craig Spector from Cemetery Dance. Very good writer does it again. A page turner.
6. Broken Sigil by William Meikle from DarkFuse. Ho hum. Well written but nothing to hook the reader. Not really any compelling suspense, mystery, thrills or horror.
7. Menace by Gary Fry from DarkFuse. Quick read with pretty predictable resolution.
8. 4 Killers by Ray Garton, Brian Keene, Joe R. Lansdale and Peter Straub from Cemetery Dance. Four good, creepy stories.
9. Vortex by Ray Garton from Cemetery Dance. Another Garton novella with interesting characters and a good suspense thriller.
10. Jack & Jill by Kealan Patrick Burke from Cemetery Dance. Very creepy novella. Good one for Kealan.
11. The Bones of You by Gary McMahon from Earthling. Watch out. These words sneak up and swallow you to the very last word. Moves right to my Best Novel of the Year list.
12. Four Zombies by Joe R. Lansdale, Norman Partridge, Norman Prentiss and John Skipp from Cemetery Dance. Excellent little anthology.

Paperback -
13. The Condemned by Simon Bestwick from Gray Friar Press. Six novellas advertised but several are less than 40 pages with one at 23 and one at 27 pages so not really 6 novellas in length. However, the worst one was a good story with several very good ones included.
14. Pus Junkies by Shane McKenzie from Eraserhead Press. Crazy horror comedy. Can’t put this stuff down until the last page is read. The characters drive the insanity.
15. Skull Moon by Tim Curran from Amber Quill Press. Curran shows his developing skills here for myth and horror. Not his best but a fun read.

Digital -
16. Flesh & Blood (Short Fiction Collection Vol. 3) by Gord Rollo with Harry Shannon and Gene O’Neill from Enemy One. Good collection with great story notes.
17. Beware the Dark magazine from Short Scary Tales. Too much sex for sex’ sake here but some good reprint stories and some good art.
18. White by Robert McCammon. Scary thriller short story with frustrating ending.
19. Apex Magazine Issue 56 edited by Sigrid Ellis from Apex. With Gene O’Neill. Really liked the O’Neill stuff.
20. The Halloween Bride by Bryan Smith. With bonus story ‘Standing in Line for the Death Machine’. Consistently good horror fiction with excellent characterization.

Other -
21. Holiday Horrors by Robert Brouhard, Kealan Patrick Burke, Ray Garton and Glen Krisch from Cemetery Dance. Chapbook with four good, creepy Christmas stories with good endings.

Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for February, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Red Moon by Benjamin Percy from Grand Central Publishing. Another very good novel by Percy. Unique take on werewolves. His prose is delightful.
2. Dreamlike States by Brian James Freeman from Cemetery Dance. Freeman writes good short stories.
3. The Fading Place by Mary SanGiovanni from DarkFuse. Creepy novella especially for parents.
4. Vampirella Archives : Volume Eight. Good to great older horror and art.
5. Dead Five’s Pass by Colin F. Barnes from DarkFuse. A contemporary Lovecraftian horror suspense thriller with good characters and a fine ending. A page turner.
6. The Skin Show by Kristopher Rufty from Thunderstorm Books. Another winner from Rufty. Great action thriller with creepy yet sexy supernatural creatures.
7. Nightcrawlers by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Creepy, gory Curran goodness but needs better characterization to be a hit.
8. Dereliction by Ray Garton from Cemetery Dance. Garton is great. Want to feel sad and lonely? Read this but don’t expect it to leave you after you finish the last page.
9. Restless Shadows by Ronald Kelly from Thunderstorm Books. Kelly is a master of the genre. I feel like I know the characters and didn’t want the story to end. Page-turning horror, mystery, thrills and suspense with a fantastic ending.
10. Dark Arts by Thomas Monteleone from Thunderstorm Books. Great score by TSB for this great author.
11. Pillowface by Kristopher Rufty from Thunderstorm Books. Rufty takes Laymon-like up a notch. Unrelenting character-driven action thriller gore-fest. Now have to read the rest of his stuff.
12. Marrow’s Pit by Keith Deininger from Darkfuse. Good scifi/horror quick read. A man struggles with his horror of a life in a bleak future world.
13. Red Cells by Jeffrey Thomas from DarkFuse. Another good entry in the Punktown universe. Well done scifi/horror.
14. Fantastic Earth Destroyer Ultra Plus by Cameron Pierce and Jim Agpalza from Sinister Grin Press. Bizzaro nonsense. Not sure what the author was trying to say.
15. The Janus Legacy by Lisa von Biela from DarkFuse. Excellent medical suspense sci/fi thriller with a background of horror. Her best yet.

Paperback -
16. Go Kill Crazy! by Bryan Smith from Samhain. Think Tarantino and Russ Meyer collaboration. Deadly buxom vixens in a straight ahead crazy homacidal thriller.
17. Piercing the Darkness edited by Craig Cook from Necro. Many good stories and author’s are included here.

Digital -
18. Hollow Point by Brett Williams from Zoe Books. Fun yet violent good story.
19. Fossil Lake: An Anthology of the Aberrant edited by Christine Morgan from Smashwords.

Other -
20. ’Storm Collectors: A Publication for the Fans of ThunderStorm Books, Issue #1 Winter 2013-2014. A real treat.
21. Dark Discoveries Magazine #25. Good mag with articles, reviews and fiction.

Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20.

Books read and recommended for March, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Chills by Rick Hautala from Cemetery Dance. I will really miss him when we run out of his new stories. Timely book with this winter’s weather. A page-turning supernatural thriller.
2. Dr. Sleep by Stephen King from Scribner. Creepy, creative, thrilling continuation of The Shining. Very good. But cut a hundred pages and wouldn’t miss much. Too much repetition.
3. Worm by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Another creature romp impaired by lack of character development. Curran also doesn’t seem able to make up his mind in describing the creatures and there is no reason given for their existence. It ends disappointedly when one big one, the mother ‘worm’, is killed even though there were many other ‘worms’ all over the place.
4. Spying on Gods by David G. Barnett from Necro. Quick read novellette written in a religious fable style. Reminiscent of Edward Lee’s Infernal Hell series as well as Wrath James White & Monica J. O’Rourke’s Poisoning Eros series. Gritty, dirty, gory and well written.
5. Severed by Gary Fry from DarkFuse. Interesting supernatural story with a unique premise. (digital only so far)
6. I Am the New God by Nicole Cushing from DarkFuse. Religion-based fear and horror is found here however, the story unfolds rather cumbersomely yet is gruesome in a way. (digital only so far)
7. When We Fall by Peter Giglio from DarkFuse. This is a superb heartfelt character driven story that evolves into a page turner. And a tear jerker with the great ending. (digital only so far)
8. DarkFuse, Volume 1 edited by Shane Staley from DarkFuse. Six stories mostly of cosmic horrors. A couple real good ones.
9. Bleeding Shadows by Joe R. Lansdale from Subterranean Press. The Master does short stories so well. This is a must read collection. It’s like every other story is a gem and it doesn’t matter if you begin with the 1st or 2nd one.

Paperback -
10. The Translators by Gord Rollo from EnemyOne. A character driven sci/fi supernatural epic. I breathed a sigh of relief at the end = good ending.

Digital -
11. Doubledown IV - Biters by Harry Shannon from JournalStone. A very action packed zombie thriller that’s totally character driven and not really about zombies. Good novella.
12. The Pack: Winter Kill by Mike Oliveri from EvilEye. Good werewolf gore and setup for a series in the Northern Minnesota woods. Characters are memorable. Time to read the sequel.
13. Lie With the Dead: Book Two of ‘The Pack’ by Mike Oliveri from EvilEye. More werewolf and thriller goodness. However, almost too much action and not enough plot here. Good enough for me to watch for the sequel though.

Other -
14. The Thing With Feathers by Norman Prentiss from White Noise Press. Excellent restart for WNP and Keith Minnion. Prentiss enthralls you with his prose.

Favorites = #1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14.

Post subject:  Re: Books read in 2014

Books read and recommended for April, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Welcome to Greengrass by S. A. Check from Bedlam Press. Quite a unique sci/fi world created here but there is not a single character I cared for. Nothing plot-wise to hang my emotional hat on. Ho hum.
2. Mia Moja edited by Michael McBride and Nate Southard from Thunderstorm Books. All 10 novelettes were good to great. A real treat and a beautiful production too.
3. The Collected Work of the Faceless God by Erik Williams from Thunderstorm Books. Good 3-story arc of The Faceless God. Wonderful character-driven supernatural stories with enough sex, gore and horrors with good endings to satisfy the best of us. Bring on the sequel.
4. Pale Horses by Nate Southard from Thunderstorm Books. Wonderfully told crime suspense thriller with well-developed, believable characters. Nothing supernatural here but no matter as it’s a great page-turner with a main characters battle with alzheimer’s the glue that holds the story together.
5. Breeding Ground/Feeding Ground by Sarah Pinborough from Thunderstorm Books. First novel was a fun read. Interesting characters and enough mystery and horror to keep me going. Second novel was actually better written and entertaining.
6. Rogue by Greg F. Gifune from DarkFuse. Very slow starter. Somewhat interesting the last few chapters.(digital only so far)
7. Ash and Bone by Lisa von Biela from DarkFuse. Nice tight little murder mystery with enthralling characters. (digital only so far)
8. Reaping the Dark by Gary McMahon from DarkFuse. Captivating supernatural monster story of greed and the occult. McMahon writes prose that vibrates with foreboding intensity with no letdown found here. (digital only so far)
9. Parasite Deep by Shane McKenzie from Severed Press. Non-stop sea monster fun with great dialogue and family troubles.
10. Eerie Archives: Volume Fifteen from Dark Horse Books. Another cool anthology.
11. The Troop by Nick Cutter (Craig Davidson) from Gallery Books. Well written contagion story of boy scouts stranded on an island and their interactions. Creepy stuff.
12. Little by Little by John R. Little from Bad Moon Books. Everything Little writes is a masterpiece. Well, almost everything and this is a good one.
13. Matheson on Matheson by Dennis Etchison from Bad Moon Books. Great conversation with a true master.
14. Ancient Enemy by Michael McBride from DarkFuse. Another awesome history lesson from McBride with horrors in abundance and wonderful characters and storytelling. One of the best novels of the year so far.
15. Werewolf Bloodlines - Book One: Gemini Rising by Mike D. McCarty from Bad Moon Books. Excellent first novel. At the least, one of the best novels of the year. Does for werewolves what Anne Rice did for vampires. Can’t wait for the sequel.
16. Hot in December by Joe R. Lansdale from Dark Regions Press. Excellent crime thriller novella from a master.

Digital -
17. In the Dark: A Horror Anthology. April, 2014. Some good, some not so good.
18. Third Eye High by Brett Williams from Comet Press. Sex, drugs and violence brought to you by a deranged hippy commune and Cthulhu.
19. Splatterlands: Reawakening the Splatterpunk Revolution edited by Anthony Rivera and Sharon Lawson from Grey Matter Press. Some good ones here.
20. Last One Alive by Kristopher Rufty. Rufty is like Dick Laymon merged with Ed Lee. Gut wrenching action with a horrific ending. Also includes two very good shorts stories.

Other -
21. ’Storm Collectors: A Publication for the Fans of ThunderStorm Books, Issue #2 Spring 2014. Another awesome issue.

Favorites = #2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 20 and 21.
