Where do I start?

Argh, I so wanted to enjoy this. And okay, it's not all bad. There are some nice moments, good performances from Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon and Antje Traue, and for the most part it runs along as a Superman film should. As for the big guy himself, I've always thought Superman is a tough character to play and, with the exception of Tom Welling's Smallville version, always comes across a little wooden, no matter who has the role. Cavill does a reasonable job, but holy cow I think Gym Jones went a bit too far with his physique.

My biggest gripe? The lack of any decent cinematography. I guess it's too expensive to hang around and wait for perfect light conditions these days. So they handed all that to the CGI boys and all the principle photography was in the form of a shaky hand held, shoved so close to the characters' faces we could see every nose hair and pimple. Can't see one iota of background so who cares about light conditions? And with all the bobbing and weaving, guess who started feeling nauseous about half way through? Ugh...

Second biggest gripe? The script. It's non-existent. It's like they gathered a few bubbles of comic book dialogue, threw it in and figured yep - that'll do. Sorry fellas, no it won't. There was also a point where the film should have ended - right there - but hell no they had to keep on going. Sigh. A bit less money on zip, zip, KABOOM (especially in the latter section) and more on a decent script and this could have been so much better.

Oh, crap I don't know.... six out of ten, maybe.

Not sure if I want to see this one, and your great review didn't help me one way or another. I guess I'm not so much a fan of super hero movies.

I actually enjoyed this. Pure check your brain at the door, forget the world outside escapism. It's a Superman film and I really don't expect much from it. Henry Cavill, I think is perfectly cast. The best stuff was the scenes with Kevin Costner. I think it's Zach Snyder's best film. There was some actual emotional element to it.

That said, my biggest gripe is that Zach Snyder directed it. He relies way too much on gimmicky CGI to make up for his lack of actual directing skills (J.J. Abrams is another). Or coherent script. That Goyer and Nolan (of the Dark Knight trilogy) actually wrote the story and script only goes to show Snyder's weakness as a director. Some scenes that should have carried more emotional depth were rushed or truncated.

I LOVED the ending. Felt it very appropriate to story and set up for sequels. But the problem with it is that it was one of those scenes that were truncated. I really think that Cavill could have carried the scene but wasn't allowed to. The emotional stuff that really could have set this movie apart, was rejected in favor of the CGI budget.

As far as Superman actors, the character itself is pretty wooden. Always has been. It's one of the reasons that I could never connect with it. The best Superman incarnation was Christopher Reeve who brought a warmth, likability, and believability to the character. Brandon Routh could have been a really good Superman but he was brought in to be Reeve 2.0. Henry Cavill is a good fit for the role and stands a really good chance at making it his own. But only if they can find an actual director.
