In the DVD Player tonight

Anyone remember the creepy little film called Carnival of Souls (from the sixties)? I just saw the remake. Not too bad...but there is something to be said about how B&W adds to a creepy atmosphere in a film.

Jeez, when are all these remakes going to stop! I saw a preview for the remake of PROM NIGHT last night. Is Hollywood seeking to remake every single horror movie out there, or are they going to come out with some original stuff too?

I'm getting caught up on my horror movies.

I just watched Bug, and I Am Legend, and tonight I'm going to watch Vacancy. Next up will be 30 Days of Night, The Mist(the b&w version), a british scifi/horror called Experiment, Slither, The Nightmare Detective, Black Sheep, Them, Awake, Shutter(japanese version), and Rob Zombie's Halloween.

Movies I'm looking forward to are: Sweeney Todd, The Eye(remake), Shutter(remake), Diary of the Dead, The Signal, One Missed Call, Cloverfield, The Orphange, and Monster(I think it's japanese.)

We were discussing Heavy Metal quite a bit in this thread. Last night South Park had a parody/homage of Heavy Metal (the episode was titled 'Major Boobage').

I watched Wrist Cutters: A Love Story last night. It is really weird but kind of enjoyable if you like weird dramcoms. Apparently if you kill yourself you go to this alternate earth we're it is inhabited only by people who offed themselves. People go around asking so how did you off? Except in this world it is just like ours only a little worse. People can not smile and everyone is generally ill-content. People want to kill themselves in this place as well but they won't because they worry that they'll go someplace worse. It was weird.

Anyway I haven't watched any of this years horrorfests. But I hope to make my way to them eventually.

And dang it I missed this weeks South Park.

Tonight I am attempting to watch Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Some aspects of the movie seam ok while others seam a bit to childish and hokey for my tastes.

Never watched 28 Weeks Later, going to check that out in a couple hours. I'm in the mood for seeing peoples faces falling apart due to bio-chemical exposure, so I hope there's a lot of that in there.

Finally got to Ketchum's The Girl Next Door the other night: anyone have a comments on that? Being an independent film and not having a trillion-dollars thrown into it, I thought it was good. Anything by Jack will either scare the hell out of you or stick to you long after. And that was the case with this movie.

I loved Wolfen! More of a thriller than a horror movie. It was pretty high-tech for it's time. It's based on the book by Whitley Strieber.

I think Albert Finney tried to affect an american/New York/irish accent. It came off a little strange, but since the character was kind of a strange guy I thought it worked in his favor.

Edward James Olmos was great as the indian construction worker. I think he's actually hispanic, but I lived with native americans all my life and I'm telling you that performance was totally convincing.

Olmos did a great job, as did Finney and Hines. The ending was very typical of the new age, mystic, hippie vibe of the era. I loved the scene in the bar where Finney goes in after he's attacked and learns of the Wolfen from Olmos and his other Indian Friends. They screwed it up a bit though, when he staggers in he goes and sits down at their table and starts listening in shock, then magically a beer appears in his hands and he's taking a slug.

I am very nervous of heights, hence my fear of flying, and when Finney is on top of that bridge and Olmos takes his safetly clip off, man...I got dizzy and grabbed onto the couch armrest! So many small details in that movie, all moving the plot along, really added to the tension. You don't see that in movies anymore, no one takes the time to add to the story, to nudge the drama along, its all action all the time.
