The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm a historian. Seriously. I am. One of my minor fields is medieval history. This book was one of the most dull novels I've read in ages. This is from someone thrilled by old, musty archives... but not in my fiction.

I decided to reread all the old King, which really inspired me as an early teen. Salem's Lot, the Shining, Cujo, and recently the Tommyknockers. His attention to detail and character is really quite amazing. I guess there's a reason he's as popular as he is. But I find I'm learning more about the craft and enjoying more now than I did even then.

I haven't read that many books this year since I read pretty slowly, but in the past month-and-a-half I've read Keene's Ghost Walk, Simmons's The Terror, Richard Stark's The Hunted, and I'm now burning through Reliquary by Preston and Child.
Each of these four books has been awesome in its own way.

Hard cover - 1. The Twelve-Fingered Boy by John Hornor Jacobs from Carolrhoda Lab. This guy sure can write. YA novel. 1st in a trilogy. Kept my attention. 2. A Carnivale of Horror edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane from PS Publishing. Excellent collection of oldies and original stories. 3. Children of No One by Nicole Cushing from DarkFuse. Very original, creative novella. Enthralling prose but the ending left me a bit wanting and a bit confused. I'll read her next one. 4. Dark of the Sun by Maynard Sims from DarkFuse. Well written thriller but I miss supernatural elements. 5. Suburban Jungle by Brett McBean from Tasmaniac. Great stuff. Excellent trilogy with bonus stories from other authors. And a Minnion remarque. Rock on.
Paperback - 6. Hag Night by Tim Curran from Severed Press. Lot's of vampiric gore and nasties but the characterization is missing. Could care less about what happens to anybody and much of the time nothing really does happen to forward the plot. Disappointing. 7. Bleed On Me by Shane McKenzie from Abattoir Press. Another gory romp from McKenzie with crazy plot and characters to fill it out. 8. Buk and Jimmy Go West by Brett McBean from LegumeMan Books. Loved this. Very unique take on a serial killer and his apprentice. Well done. 9. The Late Night Horror Show by Bryan Smith from Samhain. Too much repetitious action with bloody horror and sophomoric titillation and not enough character-driven story. Would have been better at novella length. First Smith I didn't enjoy. 10. Muerte can Carne by Shane McKenzie from Deadite Press. I'm digging McKenzie. Need more. 11. To the Death by Wrath James White from Severed Press. What a raging blast. White is on a roll. 12. The Summer We Lost Alice by Jan Strnad from self-published. Strnad writes very well. I wanted more thrills and action although it kept me reading.
Digital - 13. Cthulhu Unbound 3 by Cody Goodfellow, D. L. Snell, Tim Curran and David Conyers & Brian Sammons from Permuted Press. Curran's story was not up to par but OK. 14. The Pale Man by Nate Southard from Abattoir Press. Supernatural mystery thriller novella. I enjoy Nate's horror more but this is tight and well written. 15. Merciless by Brandon Ford from Black Bed Sheet. Pleasant surprise to find Ford. He is like the next best thing to Jack Ketchum. Creepy stuff, some based on real life murders. Will look for more from him. 16. Dead Heart by Brandon Ford. Catchy novelette with a great ending. 17. Shock Totem #6. Great mag with good stories, reviews and interviews. 18. Raptors by Conrad Williams from his web site. Very good short story.
Hard cover - 1. Remorseless by Thomas Tessier from Sinister Grin Press. Good collection. 2. Is There A Demon In You? by Brian Keene, Nate Southard, Mary SanGiovanni and Wrath James White from Camelot Books bonus chapbook with lettered edition. Four cool short stories. Good stuff. 3. The Genesis Code by Lisa von Biela from DarkFuse. Very good first novel. Horror sci/fi well done with well developed characters and a satisfying ending. 4. House of Rain by Greg F. Gifune from DarkFuse. Had trouble getting into this but the ending was great. 5. Dead of Night by William Ollie from Thunderstorm Books. Page-turner supernatural horror novella. Good one. 6. Eerie Archives: Volume Thirteen from Dark Horse Comics. Love these collections. 7. I Travel By Night by Robert McCammon from Subterranean Press. Another good one from a master. A novella vampire thriller this time around. 8. It Sustains by Mark Morris from Earthling Publications. Disturbing, haunting novella. Good one. 9. Homestead by James A. Moore from Cemetery Dance. Haunting novelette with very good art that ties into the story. 10. Dueling Minds edited by Brian James Freeman from Cemetery Dance. Cool collection based on Alan M. Clark art including authors Brian Keene, Gary A. Braunbeck, Tom Piccirilli, Tim Lebbon, Jenny Orosel, and Gerard Houarner. 11. Tyler's Third Act by Mick Garris from Cemetery Dance. Freaky cool.
Paperback - 12. Let's Play at the Adams by Mendal W. Johnson from Golden Apple. Very haunting story of abduction, torture and murder of the babysitter by the kids. Well done horror. 13. Snuff by Eric Enck and Adam Huber from Snuff Books. Whew! Heavy duty killers-for-hire novel. Intense character driven horror with a stunning ending. 14. Cemetery Club by JG Faherty from JournalStone. Pretty good read but dragged at times. Should have been a novella.
Digital - 15. Tales of Obscenity #1. Magazine. Nice first issue. Delivers as advertised. Will get the next one. 16. Girls & Monsters by Anne Michaud from DarkFuse. YA collection of ho hum stories. 17. Offline by Kealan Patrick Burke from Smashwords. Creepy novelette of misguided love and death. 18. Tannis by William Meikle from self-published. Fun. Well done short story. 19. October Roses by Mark Gunnells from Bad Moon Books. Creepy OK novelette. 20. Gravitas by Weston Ochse from on-line. Wes knows how to construct a good short story. 21. Best New Werewolf Tales Volume I from Books of the Dead. Host of horrific tales. Some quite unique. Others gory werewolf fun. 22. Worm by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Monster worm romp. Fun novella. 23. Exodus Hotel by Lisa von Biela from DarkFuse. Creepy short story.
Other - 24. Grave Tales #7 from Cemetery Dance. Stories by Garton, Crowther and Gorman with a script by Joe Hill. Decent issue but I wish the art was a bit more detailed. 25. Cemetery Dance magazine #69 from CD. Consistently good. Again. One ironic thing - according to Robert Moorish it seems that Cargo Cult Press is out of business. Ha! He has no clue what happened. 26. Dark Discoveries #23. Good mag. However I have noticed that with the change in publisher the copy-editing has declined in quality. Way too many times there are two words with no space between them. What's withthat?

Let's Go Play at the Adams by Mendal W. Johnson from Golden Apple. Very haunting story of abduction, torture and murder of the babysitter by the kids. Well done horror.
An unsung masterpiece.
The only novel by Mendal Johnson. The rights are in limbo. Would be amazing if Crossroad or someone could track the rights down and re-release.
