I liked The Ruins, but it could cove been maybe a 350 pg bk rather than 500 pager he turned out. He spent more time going over the details of their provisions than he did their reactions to the vines!

At least with The Terror, the stranded crew's catalouge of problems was important because Simmons wanted us there while CIVILIZATION crumbled against the weather. Simmons's story is sort of an allegory for global warming; the Terror reaches the pole under steam power and their reliance on it proves a mistake allowing the weather and ice packs to slowly kill them.

I'm hoping the moive The Ruins will be an improvement because it would be pretty hard to keep hammering the fact that they're starving and thirsty on film. And I doubt the filmakers would have much inclination to since they have the much more interesting threat of the vine to focus on.

**SPOILERS ALERT**

You know, I do not think it was all the characters perishing at the end that left me unsatisfied. I actually enjoyed that part.

I think it had more to do with the opened ending. These questions have been bothering me:

1) The origins of the vine and how it got there? Mayan spell? Unknown species inherent from Earth? Extra-terrestial? Was it planted? Did it grow there on its own?
2) Was the excavation done by the archeologists or was it already there?
3) Did the archeologists perish from finding the vine, or were they trapped similar to what happened to the tourists?
4) I presume that the Mayans did not want anyone escaping because the spores permeate the skin and grows within you. Were they trying to save the world by containing the situation, or is this more like a sacrificial event for them?

I actually liked that none of those questions gets answered. Made it more unknowable. But I felt nothing for the main characters. Nor did I feel like it was very well written.

I thought of it as a symbiotic relationship. They were spared the greusome deaths as long as they assisted and allowed the vine to feed.

As to the other questions regarding its origin, I actually thought of it as an intelligent alien life. It came after it was excavated and had nothing to do with the original Mayans or the excavating team. It's funny, I naturally thought those things and found it interesting that you even had to ask the quesion! Ha! Shows you how everyone can read the same infomation and come up with different conclusions.
