So my buddy Marcy and I are in the surplus store shopping away for our trip to Ireland. We have our duffle bags, hoodies, and a few other items. We need to grab one more thing and the overhead speaker that was playing music goes quiet and then starts announcing the plane crash in San Francisco. We looked at each other and then at our stuff. It was a very weird moment.....

I saw it on sale, special edition. Figured I could watch it at home while I'm doing other stuff. No biggie if it turned out to be everything 'they' said it was, ie. slow, tedious, overblown (he's cashing in by stretching a single kids book into three films! omfg how awful!!).

And okay, I thought one or two scenes suffered from a little padding, and I didn't like the singing. I hate singing in any film. But on the whole -

I remember little of reading the book as a kid. Just one or two scenes that stuck with me, Gollum and the riddles in particular, and oh boy...

So there we are. The Hobbit. Seven and a half out of fucking ten and screw the other reviewers.

Well...So much for the new roommate. She just gave 30 days notice. And on that note, I've decided to knuckle down and really concentrate on finding a job so that a) I can file my divorce and b) save up and move back to Idaho. Which means I will be transferring schools. The upside of the move is that I can rent a 2 bedroom apartment for almost $300 less than what I'm paying here, meaning that I won't have to find a roommate. Working part time with a G.I. Bill will actually get me ahead. Plus, I might/maybe/slightly possibly have a woman waiting for me there.

Just had a call from Mum. Sounds like Dad had a) a minor stroke, or b) a minor heart attack. He's at home but his memory is shot. Has to have more tests this next week. And in the middle of it all she's trying to combat a nasty virus/flu thing. Times like this I wish I wasn't 6000 miles away. Might be a bit preoccupied this weekend.

The things with the soon to be ex roommate are not all that great. We are now a week behind on all the bills.

Chris, you will rule!

Talked to Mum and Dad on the phone this morning. After tests, it sounds like Dad had a stroke, but appears to be coming around. Blood pressure back to normal etc etc. Still struggling a little with his memory, and I can tell through listening to his voice that it really knocked the stuffing out of him.

More tests over the next few weeks. Fingers crossed.
