Announcing JACK & JILL
Kealan, I love your work, I mean I really enjoy it a lot. But...
I just cannot afford these. The price is $ 33.00 each, and when you add the shipping charge of $16.00 that brings it up to almost $50.00 for a novella. I'm sure that collectors will jump on these, but all these pricey books from you and every one else is just too much for the average horror fan. And excuse me for saying this, but the price is deceptive. $ 33.00 doesn't sound all that bad, but then they add $16.00 for shipping? It costs maybe 4-5 bucks for postage and the box.
As an avid reader I am just getting frustrated and disappointed. I know it's a touchy subject, but how do you respond to this when readers are looking for more of your work but it's out of reach? Will non collectors and the average horror fan ever get to read this?
People seem to be buying these as evidenced by recent high cost novella releases by Gifune, Curran, et all. I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority here and I'm making too much of this, but like I said, it's just frustrating. I see great publishers like Uninvited Books,Tasmaniac Publishing, and Bandersnatch Books releasing very high quality paperbacks containing 200 - 300 pages with big name authors (Picirrilli, Gifune, Braunbeck) as well as mid-listers (McBean, Simon Clark, Gerlach, Vernon, Hautula) for under $20.00 with shipping, why don't we see this more often? You are as good an author as they are!

Hi Tony:
Believe me, I understand your frustration all too well. The simple fact of the matter is that if I didn't get copies of these books, I wouldn't be able to afford them myself. But another fact is that the way the economy is these days, a writer has to go where the best offer is. So say Publisher A offers to publish your novella as an affordable paperback with a cover price of $12.99 but can only pay you royalties in return (which usually amounts to nothing), and Publisher B offers to release it as an expensive limited edition that will only appeal to the hardcore collector but can pay you a couple of thousand for the rights. As a full-time writer who lives off his words, which would you choose? You can see the bind I'm in. This is my job, and I have to get paid enough to keep doing it. But the prohibitive cost is also why I made older titles available on the Kindle, and will continue to release more work in that format, in addition to pursuing other avenues as the limited editions sell out.
Believe me, I want my work out there for the readers, and I have submitted almost everything I've written to every viable market. Some of them didn't want it, some couldn't make a decent offer, and some didn't respond at all.
On the upside, JACK & JILL will indeed be made available in the future, but when and how will be up to the publisher.
I've been in the same boat as Tony for a long time. I seem to miss out on so many great books that I would love to read by some of my favorite authors simply because the only format they come out in is limited hardcovers. Just recently, there have been hardcover releases from the likes of Kealan, James A Moore, Brian Keene, Norman Partridge, Ronald Malfi, Gord Rollo, Jeff Strand, and Greg Gifune - none of which I can get at this time.
And my main problem isn't the price itself, but how many of these books pop up. All the authors I listed above, I've seen the books listed within the last month. That's almost $400 in a month, and that's only for a select few authors that I really like. It's impossible to keep up.
During that time, I managed to purchase two limited editions. Johnny Halloween by Norman Partridge (which is a Christmas present from my wife), and Four Rode Out by Brian Keene, Tim Lebbon, Tim Curran, and Steve Vernon (which I got a special discount on). I'm a huge fan of horror fiction, and quite frankly, it sucks that I can't help support more authors whose work I enjoy.
Now, having said that, I don't blame you at all, Kealan. Please don't think that. I understand the need to make a living, and I'm happy you are able to do what you love to help your finances. And I understand publishers needing to push out enough product to help them maintain a viable business. But damn, it seems like I get emails every single day of new books from Small Publishers A, B, and C, and it's almost depressing to see all these great books that I may never get to read.

I've read a lot of Kealan's work, and if I could afford a fifty-dollar book by him, I'd grab it-the guy can write with the best of them. But, yes, I also have had to pass up a few more expensive editions these days.
I was reading my copy of You In? the other night, and was wishing Kealan would've expanded on that one, making it longer. Man, that was short, but a damned good ghost story.
