As some here may know, my novella THE BLUE HERON has made the final Stoker ballot in long fiction. Good news is neither Peter Straub or Stephen King have anything in the category this year. Bad news (for me) is all the finalist stories are very strong--I mean that sincerely. I've put this up elsewhere: Okay, update. Short stories coming out in 2013: "Coyote Gambit" in Dark Discoveries; "Transformations at the Inn of the Golden Pheasant" in A DARKE PHANTASTIQUE from JaSunni in June; "Sacred Mountain" in WHC/Stokers program June; and "Tight Partners" late 2013 (TBA). Long fiction: RUSTING CHICKENS in BEHIND ENEMY LINES with Gord Rollo, Mike McBride, and Weston Ochse from DRP late in the year; THE BLUE HERON in a DRP double with Gord Rollo's THE CRUCIFIXION EXPERIMENTS, coming soon. Collection: DANCE OF THE BLUE LADY and other stories from BMB in June. In September BMB will bring out the second in the Cal Wild Mythos, CAL WILD--Near Future. Okay, 2014 tentatively: A couple of short stories (TBA). Maybe the novel I'm working on now (about 60% finished), THE WHITE PLAGUE. My novella, FROZEN SHADOWS (TBA shortly). The last two books in the Cal Wild cycle: CAL WILD--Far Future and the prequel to the series, the novel, THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. ZACH (both by Bad Moon Books--dates not determined yet). One I'm really looking forward to because each of the five items contains some of my best writing: LETHAL BIRDS includes RUSTING CHICKENS (Stoker finalist), "The White Quetzal' (first published in the acclaimed F & SF), "Transformations at the Inn of the Golden Pheasant" (appearing in the anthology A DARKE PHANTASTIQUE in 6/13 and a booty whipper, I guarantee, THE BLUE HERON (Stoker finalist), and OPERATION RHINOCEROS HORNBILL (first published as l/s and deluxe hardbacks by Thunderstorm Press and the backbone of my novel THE WHITE PLAGUE). LB will be published by Bad Moon Books, and I plan on doing an introduction myself, maybe recruiting a few words from others. We'll see. Other projects in the pipeline may pop up, including a short fiction retrospective. But this is latest update available. |

John: That happens when I start a novel...slow, slower...and falling down. Spend too much time enjoying research. Gene |

Trying something new. Usually I focus on one project at a time. But right now I'm trying to work on the novel, THE WHITE PLAGUE, and at the same time do a novelette solicited for a memorial anthology--RIDING THE DAWG. We'll see if I goof both. At the moment it is going okay. Gene |

Finished RIDIN THE DAWG and turned it in to the editor. I think the anthology of novelettes is scheduled for release in December. More on that down the road. Gene |

"Coyote Gambit" and an interview will appear in Dark Discoveries 24, being released soon. An early Cal Wild story. Two other top notch--I think--short stories will be appearing this year. "Transformations at the Inn of the Golden Pheasant" (definitely x-rated) will appear in A DARKE PHANTASTIQUE and "Tight Partners" will appear in CHIRAL MAD 2. My first readers think this may be one of my finest short stories. The title is what we called a blood brother in the Vallejo projects. A teaser: "Blood brothers are forever, man." In addition I have two recently completed short stories just going out. More on them when placed. Currently I am concentrating on my novel THE WHITE PLAGUE. The last section ends in Israel, where I hope to spend a few weeks in October. I also hope to get to Killercon in September to help promote the release of my new collection, DANCE OF THE BLUE LADY and Other Stories. If I do go I plan on giving some stuff away for folks who support my collection. More on that later. So it goes here on the front, Gene |

Thanks Gene. DANCE will certainly come my way from BMB. I have a lifetime subscription to Dark Discoveries magazine. I'll be watching for when those 2 mags are released and find a copy. Life is good. |
