Pod of Horror #68: Lansdale
Pod of Horror is back, and #68 features the legendary Joe R. Lansdale, plus newcomers Jonathan Janz and Ty Schwamberger, as well as the creator and host of The Funky Werepig, Greg Hall. Nanci Kalanta has the news, Jason L. Keene goes to the movies with Moonshine Matinee, and we give away swag in The Tomb of Trivia. Scary Words reviews Southard, Janz, Cato and Schwamberger. The fear is here with Pod of Horror #68, produced and hosted by Mark Justice. Get it now at iTunes or
Finally got a chance to listen today. Great job to Mark, Jason and Nanci. A few things that sprung to mind after listening:
- What a great interview with Lansdale. I just started reading my first of his novels recently (IN SILENT GRAVES) and it so I was very excited for this. I thought I read at one point that IN SILENT GRAVES was a good starting point for his Cedar Hills series but he didn't mention it when listing places to start for his various projects. For those that may have read them, what do you think.
- I'd never heard of Jonathan Janz before but after hearing what his novels are about I think they'd be right upmy alley, so I'm going to keep an eye out for them now.
- Jason - I couldn't agree more with your assessment of WOMAN IN BLACK. I loved the original version and really wanted to love the sequel but it seemed so bland to me. I was pretty disappointed overall. I laughed out loud several times listening to your review but I think the loudest was from the line "A ghost that winds up children's toys..."
- Enjoyed the interview with Schwamberger as well. Another to check out.
- Please continue with the Spooky Words segment. I always look forward to it.
Thanks again for all the effort you guys put into making it a great show.
Yeah, TWiB just did not cut it for me. I could've spent that time wrestling dingleberries from a rabid mammoth's arse and not had any regrets.
In Silent Graves was definitely Braunbeck (one of my favorite novels of all time, got me hooked on Gary's work). But pretty much everything Lansdale touches is pure gold.
Some great interviews. Definitely a great episode, y'all!
I do want to check out more Lansdale based on how much I loved his short story "What Happened to Me" in the haunted house anthology HOUSE OF FEAR. It's now one of my absolute favorite short stories ever. Just a masterpiece in my mind.
The thing I've noticed with recent ones is that guys like Morrell, Straub and Lansdale don't need a lot of prompting during interviews. I so want to meet Lansdale now more than ever.
Nice interviews with Jonathan Janz and Ty Schwamberger. It actually made me look up some of Ty's books on Amazon, and I think I'll probably get one soon, so I'd say the interview did what it was supposed to do. And that's one of the things I'd like to see more of--folks a lot of us may not know about but who are talented writers. Between the pod and the Cellar, I like hearing from or about writers whose work I'd like to try.
Jason was entertaining, as usual.
Best part was Nanci on a time limit. Kidding, Boss!
