If someone grabs an advance copy of your Willy, would that be considered foreplay? |

"Disturbing and poignant ... Robert Dunbar’s grasp of the human experience is heart-piercing and he clearly understands these lost souls." ~ Layers of Thought |

I know -- it's getting monotonous. “As good as it gets … the highest quality fiction. This harrowing novel transcends genre.” |

And again. “Stunning and emotionally intense … a deeply moving piece of work … succeeds on every level. Challenging yet accessible.” The Black Abyss |

They keep coming. This one contains some fairly harsh criticisms (mostly about the book's structure) but some astute appreciation as well: "A book worth reading ... profound ... honest and authentic ... as mysterious as mental illness itself. WILLY is a journey of healing, with darkness and horror both as a backdrop and a catalyst." |

I've been really proud of the reviews for this book ... and a bit bewildered. It's such a personal work. I never thought critics would respond so strongly. But just look at this stuff. “A fine read … unique … highly recommended.” MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW “Masterful … those familiar with Dunbar’s work will not be surprised by the complexity of this novel ... expertly crafted, intensely moody and infinitely suspenseful. This is horror at its best, most fulfilling.” DARK SCRIBE MAGAZINE “Dunbar’s characterization and prose brilliantly capture the internal world of the narrator … lyrical, suspenseful and immersive … a tour de force of style, character, and atmosphere.” SHROUD MAGAZINE “Profound … honest and authentic … a journey of healing with darkness and horror both as a backdrop and a catalyst.” THE READING REVIEW “Challenging and satisfying. Psychological horror has a new name, and that name is Robert Dunbar.” NIGHTS & WEEKENDS “One of the most powerful and compelling books I have ever read. In a genre-busting tour de force, Dunbar has redefined the beauty of dark literature, the effect it can have on you and what it can accomplish.” LITERARY MAYHEM “Never less than fascinating. Stunning … emotionally intense … forms a deep connection between the reader and the main character. Dunbar has taken the plotting and pacing of his earlier novels and added the emotional maturity of his later stories to produce a deeply moving piece of work. It succeeds on every level to create a challenging yet accessible novel, not constrained by genre.” THE BLACK ABYSS “Will leave an indelible mark on those who read it.” FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND “Superb … expertly crafted, terrifyingly beautiful ... one of the most powerful novels this reviewer has ever read.” HELL NOTES “Heartbreaking ... subtle ... eloquent.” BOOK LOVE “The power of this book comes from Dunbar’s ability to draw you into this disturbed young man’s mind, to feel what he feels.” HORROR NEWS “Disturbing and poignant. Dunbar’s grasp of the human experience is heart-piercing, and he clearly understands these lost souls.” LAYERS OF THOUGHT “Magnificent! This harrowing novel transcends genre.” TOMB OF DARK DELIGHTS And (of course) my favorite: “A novel about redemption. For those who long for intelligently written dark fiction that penetrates deeply into a reader’s psyche, Dunbar delivers superbly. It just doesn’t get any better than this.” HORROR WORLD |

WILLY is having a good week. Must be something to do with the high holiday. “Psychologically terrifying … puts the reader completely into the head of a troubled boy … dark and complex. This is a book that will stay with you.” ~ Reader Advisory Guide (ALA) I do like that this one is affiliated with the American Library Association. |

This continues to be an excellent week for reviews. "In a genre that tends to be repetitive, Dunbar is, oddly, a light in a world that is all about darkness." ~ LL Book Review |

Always nice to happen upon something like this. “Skillful prose, master suspense, complex thematic elements–this is Gothic literature as it once was.” ~ Mistress of the Dark |
