Jeez, have I really never posted any of the reviews for THE SHORE here? I've got to stop just hanging out in the cellar.

THE SHORE
by Robert Dunbar

Image

“Impeccably crafted, with precise and elegant prose, meticulous attention to detail and pacing, this intense and wholly original novel is one of the best to come out of the horror genre in years."
~ Dark Scribe Magazine

“In literary circles, it's often said that ‘style is the verbal identity of the writer.’ Robert Dunbar's vivid imagery continues to blaze a distinctive trail."
~ Shroud Magazine

“A tour-de-force that can hold its own among the best work in the genre."
~ Dark Wisdom Magazine

“Literally drips with atmosphere … and doesn’t let up on the intensity."
~ Famous Monsters of Filmland

“Dunbar knows how to scare his readers. ”
~ Alternative Worlds

“Edge-of-your seat suspense ... it'll scare the devil outta ya!"
~ The Horror Fiction Review

"I couldn't put the book down!"
~ Fantasy Book Reviews

“Only adds to the mythos of this legendary writer.”
~ HellNotes

"Dunbar is a master."
~ Nights & Weekends

And of course my favorite:
“Plotting, back-story, and vivid descriptions combine to allow the reader to form an emotional bond with the characters. Dunbar also makes every word count, and because of this readers may find themselves reading at a slower pace than usual, often stopping to marvel at the breadth of the author’s vision. Be prepared to be entertained by Dunbar’s excellent characterization, suspense-driven storyline, and an ending that is as terrifying as it is satisfying.”

What a long, strange trip this book represents! So much has been written about how the original edition of THE PINES was released in a badly hacked up version. (Forget vampires and werewolves. Beware the editor with an axe to grind.) Many years passed before the restored edition appeared, but when it did it generated a great deal of buzz, and not long afterwards this sequel finally appeared.

I worried about the kind of response it would receive, but the reviews have been wonderful. (Except of course for a handful of diatribes from the sort of persons who continue to find the fact of my existence an outrage.) The book is now being held hostage by the publisher of course, and I haven’t seen a statement in years … but they have promised to get to it soon. Fingers crossed, please.

Just saw this posted about The Shore over on Amazon. Rob, how dare you use all that literary stuff in your writing! Honestly, though, I don't know whether to :lol or :( at comments like this.

Me too, i hate all that metaphor and prose and literary stuff. I just wants me some horror!

THE SHORE is also slated to get the trade paperback treatment from Leisure in a couple of weeks. They actually did send me a statement for this book recently ... explaining that they've never paid me any royalties because the novel has never sold (despite all the reviews, interviews and feature stories). Umm ... so the title has never sold, but they're reissuing it? Right. Makes perfect sense. Sometimes I wonder if these people are entirely trustworthy.

“Page-turning dynamism and a narrative unpredictability… Dunbar’s prose is sophisticated in descriptive terms, delicate in arrangement and disarmingly visually and aurally evocative. In terms of storytelling verve he shares much in common with Peter Straub.” ~ Horror Novel Reviews

God, I love smart reviewers. Some harsh criticisms here, but some wonderful observations as well.

Just FYI (for those following the survivors-of-Leisure saga): The ebook versions of THE PINES and THE SHORE were reissued a couple of weeks ago, "rebranded" for 47North. New paperbacks are due to be released June 25.

Kindle sale .99¢ through January 19th.

“A masterpiece.” ~ Dark Scribe

Apparently, THE SHORE is once again on sale for ninety-nine cents. Can't wait to see the kind of "reviews" this prompts on Amazon. Last time there were some real prizes, including the epic "bought this but not going to read it cause it probably sucks."

Hello Rob,

The Pines and The Shore are imho very good novels!
What about The Streets? Will it be published this year?

Take Care,

DutchErik

Thanks, Erik -- glad you liked them. As for the final part of the trilogy -- title changed to DARK STREETS -- the plan seems to be to publish it after I'm dead. If needs be, I'll send you an announcement via Ouija board.

My old website provider was driving me around the bend, so I've let the site for The Pines and The Shore expire. For now, I'll just maintain:

Amazon thought I might want to buy this, considering that they're having a big sale on horror titles and all.

Okay then. (Should I mention that they're also my publisher?)
