LOVE HURTS "The original Gothic horror tales focused on personalities deformed through loneliness. Ghouls, vampires, werewolves: all made, not born. But the isolation? Are even such as these ever truly alone? Perhaps the psyche has always been more complex than that, desire eternally more potent than terror. Surely, none prowl entirely in solitude. Every hunchback has his gypsy, each phantom his diva, and flames of passion consume witches and martyrs alike. For every lonely monster, tradition demands one sacrificial soul seek immolation. Ashes to ashes. It remains the ultimate, transformative act of devotion." ~ from the Prologue to MARTYRS & MONSTERS
"Robert Dunbar has the unique personal vision, command of language, and atmospheric style to enrapture you in the wildest, deepest nightmare." ~ Tom Piccirilli
Just wanted to touch base with everyone before the Old Year gasps its last. I'm very pleased with the beautiful job Dark Hart Press has done with my new collection of short fiction: MARTYRS & MONSTERS. The book is gorgeous, and already people are talking about it in terms of its being my "breakaway" title. Need I even mention how many of my fingers are crossed? (Let's not even talk about the sacrifices to Pazuzu. I mean that.)
"One of my favorite storytellers, Robert Dunbar is a true craftsman – a master of the genre. His writing is rich with style and substance." ~ Brian Keene
And I'm completely blown away by the blurbs, a generous selection of endorsements by some very important writers. (A humbling experience: I keep wondering who they're talking about.) The book has just gone up for pre-order at the Dark Hart Site and is selling for $18 (with free shipping).
“Robert Dunbar is a masterful writer: intelligent, controlled, stylish, and honest.” ~ Tim Lebbon
And check out the lovely things the publisher says on the back cover: "Robert Dunbar has been called one of the “saviors of contemporary dark fiction” and an “avatar of literary horror.” MARTYRS & MONSTERS runs the gamut of this extraordinary author’s narrative range, embracing vampires and sea serpents, werewolves and swamp creatures … as well as a host of nightmares for which no names exist. Whether set on a doomed space station or in a haunted tenement, these tales are steeped in a passionate intensity that renders them all but unique within the genre, and all boast a sophistication that qualifies them as that rarest of rare commodities: horror for adults."
Robert Dunbar is the author of two novels, the supernatural thrillers THE PINES and THE SHORE, both of which achieved extraordinary levels of critical acclaim. Reviewers called THE PINES a “masterpiece” and “a classic of modern horror,” and THE SHORE has been praised as “one of the best books to come out of the horror genre in years.” Yet horror has only recently become the principal focus of Dunbar’s career. As a film, theater, dance and literary critic, he has penned articles for numerous publications, and both his poetry and his mainstream fiction have appeared in a variety of literary journals. (Several of his plays have been produced in regional theatres as well, among them the horror/comedy BATS.) Dunbar has also written and produced for television and has often appeared on programs like Haunts, Scariest Places on Earth and Weird US.
Plus the book boasts an introduction by one of my favorite authors: "Gritty and savage … profound and quietly devastating … elicited in me many of the emotions I feel when watching an Ingmar Bergman film. Despite all the mayhem, a consistent humanity manifests itself, a glimmer of hope in all the madness. Quite simply, this collection represents dark fiction as it should be – chilling, entertaining, intelligent." ~ from the Introduction by Greg F. Gifune
Isn't that incredible?
If you get a chance, drop by my newly revamped personal site for more information about MARTYRS & MONSTERS and other projects (including the upcoming Leisure release of THE SHORE). I'd love to hear what you think.
Thanks. Happy New Year, everyone! Rob Dunbar
“Intimate and terrifying, Dunbar's short fiction confidently and skillfully draws the reader in … closer … closer ...” ~ Elizabeth Massie
