I agree with you, Rob. I'm wondering, though, how much of this mediocrity comes from writers (and publishers) attempting to cash in on the hot trend of the moment? Zombies, for example. There are some writers who are attempting to use them to say something different or use them in a different way, but they seem to get lost in those simply rehashing what's been told before. That's to say nothing of at least one publisher I know of who seems to put out nothing but zombie crap. (In the next few years, we'll probably find ourselves back in the vampire arena, if the Stephenie Meyer's of the world don't destroy what's left of the vampires' credibility.) Also, how much of this is related to the ebook explosion? I ask because now anyone with a book and the ability to format it for the Kindle can put it on Amazon without first running their work by, oh say, an editor. Or maybe I'm reading a bit much into all of this. Thad |

I don't think you're reading too much into it at all, Thad. Sadly, that's all part of it. But there are intelligent readers out there with a taste for well-written horror who've been avoiding the genre for years because of the onslaught of Zombie-Dinosaur-Apocalypse bilge. These readers have no idea how much excellent work is being done in dark literature now. The trick is finding them. reaching them, convincing them to give it another try ... |
