From International Thriller Writers Award winner and Edgar Award nominee Tom Piccirilli comes a mesmerizing suspense novel that explores the bonds of family and the ways they're stretched by guilt, grief, and the chance for redemption.

Raised in a clan of small-time thieves and grifters, Terrier Rand decided to cut free from them and go straight after his older brother, Collie, went on a senseless killing spree that left an entire family and several others dead. Five years later, and days before his scheduled execution, Collie contacts Terry and asks him to return home. He claims he wasn't responsible for one of the murders--and insists that the real killer is still on the loose.

Uncertain whether his brother is telling the truth, and dogged by his own regrets, Terry is drawn back into the activities of his family: His father, Pinsch, who once made a living as a cat burglar but retired after the heartbreak caused by his two sons. His card sharp uncles, Mal and Grey, who've recently incurred the anger of the local mob. His grandfather, Old Shep, who has Alzheimer's but is still a first-rate pickpocket. His teenage sister, Dale, who's flirting with the lure of the criminal world. And Kimmy, the fiancée he abandoned, who's now raising a child with his former best friend.

As Terrier starts to investigate what really happened on the day of Collie's crime spree, will the truth he uncovers about their offenses and secrets tear the Rands apart?

Walking the razor-sharp edge between love and violence, with the atmospheric noir voice that is his trademark, The Last Kind Words demonstrates why Tom Piccirilli has become a must-read author.

"Perfect crime fiction...a convincing world, a cast of compelling characters, and above all a great story."-LEE CHILD

"Tom Piccirilli is clearly a writer to embrace now before he becomes huge. In THE LAST KIND WORDS he takes us inside a mutated family of crooks and unleashes a stunning story that ranges far afield at times but never truly leaves home, a place where shadows grow in every corner. It's superbly told, with prose that doesn't mess about or flinch from evil and characters who are best known from a distance."-DANIEL WOODRELL

"For the first time since The Godfather, a family of criminals has stolen my heart. A brilliant mix of love and violence, charm and corruption. I loved it."-NANCY PICKARD, author of The Virgin of Small Plains

"You're in for a treat. Tom Piccirilli is one of the most exciting authors around. He writes vivid action that is gripping and smart, with characters you believe and care about. I always pay attention when I see his name."-David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of FIRST BLOOD and THE NAKED EDGE

"You don't choose your family. And the Rand clan, a family of thieves and killers, is bad to the bone. But it's a testimony to Tom Piccirilli's stellar writing that you still care about each and every one of them. THE LAST KIND WORDS is at once a dark and brooding page-turner and a heartfelt tale about the ties that bind. Fans of Lee Child will love this hard-boiled, tough-as-nails novel."-LISA UNGER, New York Times bestselling author of FRAGILE

The latest Library Journal has a nice little preview of TLKW. I always appreciate anyone who can give a generous synopsis of my work. I have difficulty doing it myself. Also hip to see that they say the book is generating "lots of buzz."

"MYSTIC RIVER set the bar on classic literary mystery and THE LAST KIND WORDS is a novel on the same superb playing field. Compassionate, fascinating, and with an adrenaline narrative that is as gripping as it is moving. Pure alchemy."--Ken Bruen, author of THE GUARDS and HEADSTONE

Thanks to all these generous folks who recently took the time out to read advance copies of TLKW and provide some sweet sound bites.

"Tom Piccirilli’s THE LAST KIND WORDS is a story borne of dark legacies—the legacy of family violence and loss. With vivid prose and a palpable urgency, it succeeds utterly as a crime tale. At the same time, it reminds us that the crimes can emanate from both the darkest and lightest of places, the heart of a damaged family rendered with clear-eyed yet fervent beauty."--Megan Abbott, author of THE END OF EVERYTHING and DARE ME

"Piccirilli's family of heartbroken thieves bound by love, secrets, and family codes, kept me turning the pages until the very end. It pained me to put this book down at night. Tom Piccirilli is the leader of a new pack of writers combining the best elements of crime, mystery, and literary fiction in a way that would make Chandler proud. I loved this book and can't wait for the sequel."--Sara Gran, author of DOPE and CLAIRE DEWITT AND THE CITY OF THE DEAD.

"THE LAST KIND WORDS will bring Tom Piccirilli the attention he's long deserved. It resonates with the same passion, hearbreak, style, and power as the work of Dennis Lehane and Walter Mosley. An amazing novel that is both a page-turner and a stunning look at a criminal family."--Ed Gorman, author of BLINDSIDE and BAD MOON RISING

This might easily be Pic's best book yet. And it damn well-deserved the hardcover treatment it received.

The characters were wonderful and distinct, which you would expect from Pic. The plot may seem a little straight-forward in parts, but it's not just the destination with a Pic tale, but the journey as well. Tom linked a review to his Facebook page that went on about the use of similes, but I never saw one that took me out of the story. The use of dog breeds as names, which I thought might give me pause while reading it, didn't. In fact, it appeared that each character seemed to almost share certain traits with the breed they were named after.

While thinking about what to write here, something struck me about Tom's work. Maybe Tony has noticed this, or someone else smarter than I am has, but here goes. Everyone talks about Tom's main characters and how they deal with family, but the thing I noticed and don't remember seeing is that these characters go much deeper than that. Each of these men are at war with themselves. Not necessarily the mental illness that Tom writes about in some stories, but true war with self-doubt and regret and self-pity. I may be reading too much into it, but it's what I see.

Anyway, read The Last Kind Words. It is one hell of a book.
