Sarah’s Room, the feature debut of Scottish director Grant McPhee, is a dark and brooding study of one man’s descent into paranoia. When Joe’s wife, played by Kitty Colquhoun, unexpectedly invites her best friend Sarah (played by Hanna Stanbridge) to live with them, Joe (played by Patrick O’Brien) becomes obsessed with her, convinced that she is not what she seems.
With echoes of indie horror favourites Kill List and The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears, the film is beautifully shot by McPhee himself. Also a cinematographer, McPhee worked in the camera departments of films such as Under the Skin and Cloud Atlas before making the leap to directing with Sarah’s Room.
Shot in just five days for a budget of £4000, Sarah’s Room is the first step in McPhee’s plan to reinvigorate the Scottish indie film scene from the ground up. His drive and passion have produced a truly unique film, drenched in atmosphere.
